Spinning Gear Question

Recommended Posts

So I took out my first spinning combo today and absolutely loved it as I was finally able to cast weightless senkos as far as I wanted, but I do have one question. Like on a baitcaster if the lure isn't going where you wanted or into any brush, you can always stop the spool with your thumb, is there any similar technique for spinning gear to stop a lure from heading straight into a bush? Thanks a bunch!

Good Question. I will usually cup the spool with my cranking hand and at the same time point the rod in a direction away from the object.

With practice, you can grab your line and slow it down with your left hand (or right, depending on which you crank with).

Slam your palm down on the spool with whatever hand isn't holding the rod.

I don't tend to touch the line because I use braid on my spinning reels and I don't want to get cut.

Right

Never been cut by braid on cast by stopping it with my hand or finger.

Just feather the line coming off the spool with the pointer finger of the hand your holding the rod in....your not going to get cut.

X2

I do that on most every cast that isn't to open water.  You can learn to be as accurate with spinning as with baitcasting if you practice.

Yeah, I probably should have been a little clearer on that

But FWIW, I've never been cut when doing a quick stop of my line (10 lb PP) as described. I've been cut plenty of times freeing it from snags incorrectly.

I would normally suggest feathering, or palm slapping the spool. I suppose in my case, I don't throw anything very heavy on spinning gear, everything is weightless, or up to ⅛ oz give or take.

Best to be cautious with braid.

+1 best way to do it.
