Spawn Fishing?

Featured Replies

I'm going fishing this coming Wednesday seeing as how it's going to be 70-75 degrees. Should be a fairly nice day to go fishing I think. When it comes to fishing during the spawn, I've forgotten how to fish these conditions. Cold water temps, shallow fishing.. what should I be using? I'm thinking swim jigs and spinnerbaits? What do you guys think? Give me some advice please!!

Sorry about the crappy illustration, but this is the pond/lake that I fish. It is 250'x1000'. In the creek channel is where the bass normally spawn; of course in the shallow areas. Basically no cover in this pond, only the med/heavy submerged grass during the summertime.

You're not planning on trying to find spawning fish this weekend are you? I think you'll be very disappointed if you are. With temps that warm they probably will move up shallower than they have been but I would guess the water will still be quite a bit too cold for them to spawn yet. The good news is, if they do move up to the shallows it will be to feed in preparation to spawn. I would start by fancasting a 1/2 craw colored rattle bait and retrieving as slowly as you can to keep it off the bottom or you can do the same thing with a 1/4oz single Colorado bladed spinnerbait. If that doesn't work and the weeds and junk on the bottom isn't bad you can always try dragging a dark colored jig slowly along the bottom. I would try to concentrate on the northeast portion of the pond because it will get the most sunlight and warm up the fastest. I wouldn't be scared to fish that shallow portion either. There may not be many up there but if they're in that portion they should be in a feeding mood.

yeah, its doubtful the fish will be spawning just yet in NC. the water temp wont equal the air temp. but it will warm the water up some and could make the fish want to feed. i would try shallow diving cranks, lipless cranks, and shakey heads. also would try t-rigging a berkley power bait red shad worm...

Yea probably a tad early on spawners... But you can cover that water in a day... From top to bottom

Post you're results! Have fun!

Small lake or large pond depending on how you look at this. It maybe another 2 months before you see bed fish, it's been a cold winter. When the bass do spawn they should be on the flat/ cove you circled next to the channel or in the channel depending on wind direction.

I would start with C- rig, T-rig or jig and fish the break line starting near the channel mouth clockwise.

Spawn; water temperature 62-67 degrees, not air tempers.

They're not spawning yet, after the snow we got the water temps are hovering around 39-42 degrees. It's still very slow fishing here, and I doubtful the pre-spawn will start before mid march now.
