scrounger jig heads

are these things worth a try, just bored flipping thru the BPS book and found something I don't actually own, so before I buy them, are they any decent?

Given the time & place they are killer. I keep them close by always. I call 'em my do nothing bait, just cast & crank. However they will helicopter on the cast & sometimes I have to put a small swivel inline.

I think they are great. I use them often. If you pick a few up, play around with a few different soft plastis until you find one that you like the action on. Just like with a crankbait, you should be able to feel the tip of your rod vibrating if you have matched the correct scrounger head size with the correct plastic. The lip on the S.H does create a good vibration, but if you are skipping it sometimes it will turn over, so you will want to check for that. Just reel it in and hang on, I often feel like I am doing nothing as well when I use these and catch fish. Allot of people like to put a fluke style bait on them but I like something with a curly tail.

I see long lipped, medium and small, whats the difference? same as crank lips?

I use the long lip Im pretty sure the longer the lip the more resistant's / wobble you will get when pulling it through the water.

It doesn't really dive like a crankbait, but they do come in different sizes to pick from depending on where you want to fish in the water column.

Lip size affects the speed of retrieve.  Longer = slower.

and finally, who makes the best one? Thanks for all the help!

Like mentioned, they can be great. I seem to be the only one that gets major line twisting problems, and still can't figure it out.

are these things worth a try?

Hell yes, they are.  In my experience, schooling fish love 'em.

You can also paint scroungers and add skirts onto them.

Try threading a flipping tube onto a scrounger for a unique presentation.

This is about the only "new" bait that I'm definitely going to give a work out this season.

Nibbles is on it.

the scrounger is definitely worth trying. the lips are different lengths for different wobbles. the longer the lip themore wobble you get. i've had the best success fishing them with flukes, and either the medium or long lip. go to scrounger.com for lots of info about them.

What size weight do you all prefer?  I bought a pack of 1/4 oz longer lips last year but never really got around to fishing them much

Weight determines running depth, lip size for speed.  Heavier, = deeper, bigger lip = slower.  Trail and error gets you to the right combo.  Different trailers change both aspects.
