Should I get Under Armour cold gear base 2.0 or 3.0 for fishing?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone has tried this Under Armour cold gear base 2.0 or 3.0 stuff when they're fishing? I've been to the store and felt both materials. I've never owned any UA though and everyone seems to talk about it like it's some kind of magical material, so I don't really know what to expect from it.

Has anyone had the 3.0? I just worry that it would get too hot in the truck driving to the lake or later in the day when the temp goes up a little.

I live up north and do a lot of fishing in weather around 40 degrees. It can get windy. I'm not very thick myself. I'm trying to avoid ever having to put on a jacket while I'm fishing.

Any recommendations?

I have the 2.0 and it keeps me pretty warm in 40+ degree weather as long as the winds not over 10 mph.  I normally wear just jeans/t-shirt over it and then wear a zip-up fleece. If you don't want to wear any kind of jacket definitely go with the 3.

That sounds like the understatement of the year!   ;D

I was stationed @ Grand Forks AFB for almost four years and I can't remember a day when the wind didn't blow.

I'd go with the 2.0 if it was me.  40* isn't all that cold if you are active and you have a windbreaker on over the top of it.  With the 3.0, you'll be driving down the road with the windows open to keep from sweating up.

Look into a merino wool baselayer. They are incredibly comfortable, do not stink after wearing for a day, and much warmer than underarmour, at least in my opinion. Under Armour leaves me feeling "wet" which leads to that cold/clammy feeling. Merino wool never leaves me with that wet feeling. If you do not sweat at all, then it does not matter.

Nothing I have used comes close to the merino wool. Plus, it is much more comfortable in my opinion. Price wise, they are comparable.

I would personally look at a polartec powerstretch top before I would go with Under Armour. I have both and would rank the powerstretch ahead of underarmour, but behind the merino wool.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I use the base 3, was out last weekend fishing a heated water area of a local river. The air temp was 12 when I got there. Never got cold with the under armour.
