I won't recommend a brand as it tends to be a personal preference. However, if I had to choose one all around rod, it would be a 7' MH fast rod.

x4. Couldn't agree more. If I had to choose one rod as my all-around it'd be by 7' MH Duckett MicroMagic. Seems like you either love or hate these rods. They work for me and I couldn't be happier so far. Let us know what you settle on!

As far as brand, you are going to get a different recommendation for every post.   There are tons of "$100-$150 rod" threads.  A search should turn up all the recommendations you can handle.

I just picked up an *** 7'3 mh it it think would fit in that category got it at gander mountain for 120 plus tax with a 30 mail in gift card..

This.

Right now ther veritas is on sale for 79.99. CANT GO WRONG with this rod at that price. Light, sensitive, balances well.

7 foot to 7 foot 6 (depends on your height and fishing platform and preference) medium heavy fast action with exposed blank reel seat.

I own the 7'3" Veritas, I think it is the perfect length.

Man for those activities I wouldn't pay much attention to what it is called (Medium Heavy or Heavy) but I would want a lure rating up to 1 oz versus being rated at 3/4 oz max. And any length 6'-6" through 7'-3" that you feel comfortable handling.
