man I love this reel, of course the dreaded Revo gen 3 so I hope it is fixable.  I got these second hand, they were take backs from bps. it is a revo gen3 sx. It casts like a d**n dream but it makes a God awful whistling/squealing sound. as said fine condition and casts great; just the squeal. Does it need cleaned and oiled

A little oil in the bearings might fix it. Give em a good cleaning and a drop of oil and see. If not's not that, one of the more experienced reel guys will surely chime in.

In my experience, squealing usually means you need oil on the brakes. That usually pertains to centrifugal systems though.

Sqealing on the cast is often mistaken for dry bearings (which may be the case) but more often it is centrifugal brakes. Clean the drum and shoes with alcohol and a swab. Some like to put a THIN film of light oil on the drum as well. If you don't have all the brakes on you can also try alternating the ones that are off and on.

Listen to this man^. I have a couple of friends that think I'm a reel magician (I'm a long ways away from that) because I fixed their squealing baitcasters after they had "oiled the bearings" with no improvements.

I have no idea, your post is confusing, on one hand you say that it cast great but has a loud squealing noise. The only part of the reel that is moving during the cast is the spool, everything else is disengaged. For the life of me I can't think of anything related to the spool that would make that much noise and still allow it to cast well.

Your original post makes it sound as though you bought more than one, if this is the case, my suggestion would be to remove the spool from one of the other reels and replace the one that is making the squealing and see if it continues or stops.

Good catch. I missed the x.  You can make sure the pinoinshaft is disengaging fully from the spool end. There should be a little e clip around it under the cast control cap and bearing.

I had a Chronarch 50MG that had a super high pitched squeal during the cast.  I do my own maintenance, so cleaned/oiled the bearings and the centrifugal brake raceway and it persisted.  So I sent it back to Shimano.  Got it back with new bearings and the old bearings included in the box, with a note saying they couldn't really find anything wrong with the reel but changed the bearings just in case.  First cast - the squeal was still there.  Over the next month or so, it went away.  I never found the problem and still love that little reel.

I am not so good at dismantling reels. I do not know why my post is confusing, sorry but that is what it does, cast a dang mile, I can almost spool out casting a 4th red eye shad. no grinding on when reeling it back etc... I will get our local reel cleaner to see what he can do

The spools should be compatible with one another, as they both use in the infini II design. The only thing I can think of trying is to clean the groove that the spool lip rides in on the frame, it is a close tolerance area and if it gets dirt or debris in it, it might cause some noise- its a long shot.
