My girlfriend has recently taken up gardening. I don't know much about it, just what she has briefly told me, but I know she is doing the "square foot gardening" variety. I built her a garden box 2 feet wide, 3 feet long, and 1 foot deep recently which we have stained and coated with polyurethane. She has been growing many sprouts indoors, herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, I'm sure I'm missing some. She has also bought seedlings of a few vegetables from local nurseries, broccoli and asparagus I think. Anyway, now that the weather is warming up she intends to move them outdoors into the box I built for her.

Anyway, I hope it all works out because it would be pretty sweet to have all these fresh veggies to eat for the summer. Now I gotta convince her to grow hops!!!

potatoes, sweet potatoes, and garlic are in the ground and growning.  Hopefully soon I can get the jalapenos and tomatoes out there.

I have done all mine from seed and outside....a lot of the stuff i read said to start them inside and then harden them off and plant in your garden.  If i had room inside i might do that but no dice for me.  I am just waitign to see those first little sprouts pop through the ground.

Done the seed thing outdoors and with fine soil, a light mist couple times a day you will be rewarded.  Unless of coarse a rabbit or cat wants to snack or dig.

My dogs keep the rabbits and cats away, i am more worried about the stupid birds but i have a feeder that will hopefully keep them occupied.   While watering yesterday I noticed the arugala is already sprouting.  I imagine the spinach will be soon to follow.....thought it was weeds at first but it was to nicely distributed and shaped different to be weeds.

I never thought i would be into gardening but it is kind of fun.  It also really hasn't been that much work all things considered.  A little effort in the beginning but even that will be less ned year since the beds are all made now.  I am really looking forward to having some fresh tomatoes to make enough sauce to last me till next year's garden :)
