Lew's Reel Cleanings

Featured Replies

I've never greased my own reels only put oil on, so I was wondering do you put grease or oil in the lube port? Thanks for any advice

I would like to know this as well, although for my revos i just recently acquired. They both have the same port underneath the gear so I would like to know if people use that abu garcia lube or some other kind of lube/grease or oil in there?

Putting grease in the lube port is a waste. It is putting more grease on top of the old grease, which may have gunk in it already. The extra grease that you put on this grease will most likely get scraped off by the pinion gear, and end up smothering the yoke in it. If there is way too much grease, the grease can eventually reach the ends of the pinion gear and get on the spool shaft which will harm your casting abilities quite majorly.

A simple way to grease the gear is to break the reel down, clean the old grease out of every slot in the gear between the teeth with a toothbrush, and then reapply grease.

That little square hole in the bottom of the right side plate on a baitcaster is probably a weep hole for moisture to escape, not a lube port.  It's too small to put grease into and there's nothing in there that should be lubed with just oil.  Squeezing a bunch of grease in will just gum up everything and will not get to the parts that rub together and actually need to be cleaned and re-lubed.

Neither. Lube ports are a waste of effort unless you're the consumer that will chuck a reel every few years and buy another. Slapping new grease on top of old is an exercise in futility at best. Keep your reels as clean as you can and oil the bearings and worm shaft once in a while. Spring for a deep cleaning once a year and your reel will perform at its best and last a good log time. This costs less than an oil change in your car/truck and takes 4 times as long making the service a pretty good value.

I usually get two reels done on my lunch hour. Just did my new Lews BB1 Pro and was surprised how much grease was on the bearings. Cleaned and lubed everything and now can't wait to try it! Might have come from overseas and grease is a good thing on the bearings. As long as you know it's there and clean it up before use.
