Stand Up Shaky Heads

Featured Replies

So, I bought some stand up heads a few weeks ago. I've been just messing around with them. I haven't used them yet because bass season isn't open, but they don't seem that practical to me. It seems like they would fall on the side very easily, and if there was any current they look like they would just get knocked over. Is there any real advantage to a stand-up head over a normal shaky head?

I was always under the impression that all

shaky-heads were stand-up. Ones that weren't were just "jig heads". The more knowledgable will correct/confirm shortly.

I'm talking specifically about the heads with a flat bottom to rest on, they look much different than a football head shaky. I think some shaky heads are basically the same as normal jigs, just with larger hooks for bulkier plastics/t-rigging

Gotcha...To me anything with the flat bottom is a shaky head. I have some football shaky heads and some non football shaky heads. I just refer to any jig head with a flat bottom as a shaky head and anything without a flat bottom as a jig head, whether it's football, round or whatever.

Click on the Mega Strike link and check out the ShakE2 heads.

Yeah the MegaStrike heads look like they would be much more effective, and I'll probably order some soon. I was really just wondering if the ones I have are worth it to use, even though there are better heads out there. I'm going to get Strike King heads also and see how they work.

They were made to stand up better than the normal jigs. On sandy bottoms they excel! I do like a regular old round head though, guess I'm old school.

The flat heads dont stand up well. They do work better with a floating worm.

Footballs workbetterl and you can rock the tail up and down.

But the Megastrike are the $%

Here are the New EWG Megastrike heads -As soon as we get them made-They are out the door by the thousands  Sizes 1/8  3/16 1/4 3/8 1/2 3/4  and 1 oz

Why does it matter if they stand up?? Do you think a worm or minnow sits on the bottom with it's hind end up in the air inviting itself to be eaten? I'm guessing no. For even the best designed "stand up" head, it's going to have to land perfectly on the perfect bottom for it to stand properly. How many times do you think your bait it going to land perfectly on a flat rock or really level bottom and stand up? And how often do fish hold on nice, smooth bottoms? A round or football head will sit at about a 45* angle a majority of the time and still catch tons of fish every year. Fish what you have confidence in or what works for you, just saying I think the whole "stand up" think is highly overrated and emphasized.

I like the flat bottoms in sandy areas and the footballs in rocky or more rough terrain. They seem to get caught up on things less often.

It's kinda funny you mention that bluebass. I didn't mean to get stand up heads, I ordered the wrong heads on accident. I was just hoping that they would be good for something, instead of just falling over and having me drag them along. I do prefer "normal" shaky heads. I was just wondering if there was an advantage that I wasn't seeing.

Crawdad baits on stand ups look great
