Right now I have a medium heavy rod that I use for everything. What would best help me fishing to purchase next ? I know what reel, looking mainly for a rod.

So 2 mh rods would be better than a mh and med ?

This rod feels like a Med. Not as stiff as a lot of MH rods I've tried.

I would opt for a H powered rod to throw jigs, frogs, c-rigs, etc or a MH-mod fast to throw crankbaits.  It really just depends on how you like to fish.  

What reel are you using?

Would be a tremendous help to the guys if you let us know what you want to use the new rod for.  Also in what kind of cover.  A second MHF rod is not out of the question.  Just depends on how you like to fish.  Many are rated down to 1/4 oz.  If you want to throw 1/4 oz. jigs with a trailer, then a MHF would be an excellent choice as we are probably talking in the neighborhood of 3/8 oz. total weight.  Of course this weight would be a piece of cake for a MF, but if you wanted to use a 1/2 oz jig with trailer, then you would be over the weight limit on some Medium rods.  I like my Falcons, but all my Medium Falcons top out at 1/2 oz.  However, I have other Mediums that top out at 3/4 oz.

 

I don't see what difference the reel would make as far as choice of rod is concerned unless you were using a reel below a 6:1 ratio.  In that case I would consider the possibility that you were going to be fishing deep crankbaits although that isn't the only possibility, just my first guess.

 

EDIT:  Jrob's suggestion is another good one.   I've got a couple 6'10" HF rods that I started using last year.  Never thought I would use a Heavy here in Pennsy, but I have found I really like these rods.

 

Also I'm curious as to which reel you have decided to get.  Only because I am nosy.    It is nice to see what other people like.

Like you I want to cover the whole power spectrum, but have to admit that when I leave the house MH rods always outnumber the Mediums.

Right on. Once you have the spectrum covered, stock up on MH rods... they will do anything! 

Sorry guys for lack of info. I will be using a lew's tournament speed spool. Right now I have 1 rod that I do it all with from throwing frogs in thick stuff to topwater, spinners, Texas rigs, and crankbaits. I would like to get another rod and kinda split the stuff I do between 2 rods instead of having 1 rod for everything. I fish in mainly open water but occasionally some thick stuff. I mainly throw 3/8 oz jigs and 1/2 oz jigs. Mainly everything I throw is 3/8. I very rarely throw a 1/4 oz lure.

I'd say either another MH or step up to a H power rod. If you fish thick stuff occasionally it may not be a bad idea to step up a power. For a lot of rods, I feel like the 1/2oz mark can go either MH or H, depending on the company.

Don't limit yourself with just one more rig.  Keep getting rigs until you're tripping over them in your boat, then cut back a couple so that you don't trip as much.  You're gonna need a shaky head rig, and a bubba shaky head rig, and a drop shot rod and a bubba drop shot rod, and a pitching rod, and a ned rig, and a weightless senko rig, and a cranking rod and a square bill rod and a spinnerbait rod.  That's just for starters.  Buy them all.  Fishing rigs cost money.  Fishing time is priceless.   Don't be scared of debt.  You can always make more money.

 

My current favorite these days, among my newer rigs is a 7' MH spinning rod (it is on the medium side of MH)  I'm throwing deep diving cranks using 14 lb Fire line.  I like it because I can make side arm casts into the wind, much easier and with much more distance than my bait casting deep cranking rig.

 

With fewer line problems, I am almost immune to wind.

 

Being serious for a moment, (which is a challenge), figure out which kind of fishing you like best, and buy the best rig you can afford, tailored to that technique.  You already use your other rod for other techniques anyway.

I haven't used the *** before. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you advice though as they are popular rods.

What things could I do better with a medium rod over a medium heavy rod ? I don't have anything under 3/8 oz weights, if I do its Texas rigging with a 1/4 oz weight and that equals more than 3/8 oz anyways.
