Which St Croix Should I Buy

Featured Replies

I'm between triumph spinning rod series and the premeir spinning rod series. I want the rod to be durable and strong. I usually fish lures between 1/4-1/2 ounce, but also use bait. I usually fish for perch, bass and occasionally hook a nice striper, so the rod has to handle that. Also what action should I get the rod in and should I get it in medium or medium heavy. Lastly I don't jab to much money to spend on a reel but what would be the best reel I can get for under 70 bucks. Thank you guys

I have a few triumphs, I really like them for the price, the premier is not much of an upgrade (if any), i would go with the 7'M/F with a pflueger president... total cost is around 140.00...

I have two premiers and a triumph and i like the premiers waaaaaaaaaay more and the triumph doesnt suck by any means

If you're on a budget then just get a Truimph. the Triumph and Premier use the same graphite so its no more sensitive than the other.

I'd probably go with a Premier in Medium power Fast action. Have heard good things about the President for a spinning reel.

There is about a $20 dollar difference between the two. Me personally I would go Premier. I have 2 and they are good everyday rods. Both Triumph and Premier have 5 yr warranties. I say if you have the chance, go see them both place the reel you are going to purchase on the both rods and see which one feels better for you. Good luck!!

Do you guys think a medium power rod can handle stripers

Do you guys think a medium power rod can handle stripers

yes... the drag is the most important thing for landing large fish on spinning gear, so make sure it is set correctly, and you should be fine... I have caught dozens of 40"+ pike on 6'6" medium power ugly sticks, with cheap shimano spinning reels...

Plus "Medium" is a subjective term. These rods have a good amount of backbone. St Croixs  tend to fish a little heavier than other similar labeled rods.

What kind of reel should I get I don't want to spend more than 70 bucks also how tall should I get the rod 6'6 or 7'0

X2 Premier and Sahara.

Premier... USA made. It also has a flex coat finish that the Triumph lacks. I would go Medium power unless you plan on throwing weedless baits into heavy cover. The Pflueger President is a great reel for 50 bucks. But if you can afford the 70 dollars, go for the Pflueger Purist. The aluminum body and heavier bail wire is worth the extra 20 bucks IMO.

Thanks guys what size should I get the rod in 6'6 or 7'0

I have the 6'6 model, it's a nice rod and I've used it for 2 years without problem but I'd rather have had a 7'

I stood in Cabelas and compared the Premiers and Triumphs side by side. The guides are different and appear of better/stronger construction with the Premiers. Combine that with being made in the US, I went with the Premier. It just also happened that Cabelas has an exclusive split-grip Premier that I wanted.

FWIW since I mostly thrown light, finesse plastics with it, I got the 6'6" MF 2-piece with split grips. Love it.

What size pflueger president reel should I put on the st croix premeir medium 6'6 or do u think I should get a 7'0

I have a st Croix premier and do like it a lot but i just got a *** *** black and it casts further is def more sensitive and looks better too for the same price. I will buy *** before more st Croix's... Both are made out of the country...

I have a 1000 size Stradic with my 6'6" premier. I only fish for bass, so the smaller spool is not a problem. I have a 2500 Okuma reel for my other setup and it's fine, but half of the spool is filler line.

My third setup is a baitcaster with an *** Black rod. I like it quite a bit for heavier lures.

Finally the Premier is made in the US.
