Wife's Tales...

Featured Replies

Not true, I can see just fine.....  :)

I used to have a friend that everytime somebody would say something like this he would try to act dumb and say "I don't understand, can you please draw me a diagram." It almost never got old!

I was always told as a kid that once you cut a nightcrawler in half you cannot put it back in the box as it will poison the rest.

I still thought that was true...

Len22, How many fishermen you know, lay bunches of bananas on the bottom of their boat, fresh from South America. This is an "old wives tales" thread. Ya know like, "wind from the west, fish bite best" not where did the logic of no "bananas" in the boat came from. I believe, this was supposed to be a fun thread not a gotcha thread.

no gotcha just a reply

When the turtles are on the logs sunning the bass are on the beds.  Or something like that!  When the dogwood trees bloom the bass are on the next.  If you catch and release the fish will go back and tell the others not to bite!

When the turtles are on the logs sunning the bass are on the beds. Or something like that!  No, that doesn't work, they do that all summer long. :)

When the dogwood trees bloom the bass are on the next.  Yes, this works

"If you catch and release the fish will go back and tell the others not to bite!"  No, this doesn't work either.

Recently on my second cast of the day I pulled in a nice sized female LMB, took a pic and released her; on my forth cast of the day to the same area I pulled in the male.  It's been my experience (and shown on the Hook n' Look TV show) that when you release a fish they will go deep and slowly work their way back to where they were; and that's a good thing. :)

Yup I guess that is why they are considered wife's tales and not facts.

I still thought that was true...

My son asked me why that is true, so about a year ago I did some research and found nothing to say that is true. I did however find lots of experts who said that it's not harmful and infact sometimes the worms can grow themselves back. If anyone has evidence to show it is true I would love to hear it because then I could go back to my son and tell him Dad was right all along...haha.

Differences between superstition, myths or wives tails; bringing bad luck is superstitious, beliefs based on myths are wives tails. If we were able to separate myth from fact, anglers would have little to talk about!

And fewer excuses.

I don't know anybody that does that with bananas and I also don't know anybody that brings a banana on MY boat, besides "eating bananas causes your swet glands to give off an odor that's stronger than normal in attracting mosquitoes"  Everyone knows that

Never spit in the water, you wont catch fish!

Yellow lighter gives you bad luck.

Wind from the south the fish don't bite.

Young wives will have so many items on their (your) "honey do" list that you'll rarely have the chance to go fishing.  Old wives, on the other hand, will desperately want you out of the house-thus giving you plenty of time to fish.

My grandmother always said if the cows were all laying down the fish weren't biting!

I always believe that until this spring...... while driving to the lake the cows were laying down. I told Jeff this aint good, and told him why....

I think you may have your directions mixed up

East= bite the least

west= bite the best

North= dont go forth

South= will throw it in their mouth

Not true, I can see just fine.....  :)

then apparently you have not cleaned it "enough"...

In terms of the first cast, whenever I catch an nice fish in the first few casts, it usually turns out to be the best fish of a day that is usually mediocre!  My dad once landed a 22" flounder on his first cast surf fishing, then someone walking on the beach said "Wow! That's the first fish I have seen caught all week!" needless to say, the fishing after that was horrible

I cant leave Jeff out! Just visited your youtube channel Jeff.. Didnt know they were your videos prior. You guys do some great fishing.
