Spooks

Featured Replies

So I was out at bass pro in Kansas a few weeks ago and of course with all the bass spooks their was a saltwater spook mixed in there. This is probably a stupid question but since it is a saltwater lure will that effect my chances of catching bass?

Many saltwater lures are balanced for saltwater which has a different buoyancy than freshwater.. for example my yozuri saltwater popper which floats and pops ok in saltwater barely floats in freshwater..

I actually prefer the zara spook that has the saltwater sticker on it. It is the same bait from heddon, only has thicker and stainless split rings and corrosion resistant trebles and split ring. I have never noticed a difference with the spook, but suspending saltwater lures often sink in Freshwater as they are designed for salt. Some of my favorite lures are marketed for Saltwater, like a Yozuri Banana boat walking bait, Mirrodine even though it sinks slowly not suspending like it does in salt, but remember, companies like Bass Assassin and Saltwater Assassin as an example call one bait a turbo shad, other a sea shad, and it issame bait.

I have found that companies like Rapala are smart since they do not market to either, and people just buy both. Some people will not buy a lure unless it says saltwater. It drives me nuts when someone tells me a Trigger X bio bait that says saltwater on it, and the bait is a new penny gold flake fluke, which we call green pumpkin/gold flake will not work in freshwater since it says saltwater....I have never noticed any difference from Gulp, Trigger x, Yozuri Excite a bite in Fresh or salt...Same with Exude and Mister twister and D.O.A. owner actually designed many baits for both, geared toward the big O. He puts out great videos on how to fish his baits.

The zara spook, super spook, any spook is a great lure and super fun to fish. Hang on, bigger fish like spooks compared to other walking baits in my opinion...Not sure why. Sammies are great, but I find a spook almost as good if not as good. I like a Rapala Skitter Walk as well, and I just tried a River 2 Sea Walking lure a friend let me borrow which stayed on my rod and is very very good.

Love a spook. You need to love it as well. I find Mono leader or no leader works best for walking, loop knot if not a split ring, and fluro is ok, but it sinks so drags the nose down and makes walking tougher but can be done if you need stealth or it gives you confidence....

Not at all. The Mirrolure is designed for saltwater use and makes a great bass bait also.

I absolutely love spooks. In a few weeks I hope there should be some fishing coming to the top and its on. I have a box of spooks and most notably punkers just waiting to get bit.

I have an expansive Super Spook Jr. collection, a few of which are the saltwater type. They have really cool color options in saltwater and, in my opinion, are just as effective as their regular cousins. The only noticeable difference to me, aside from selection, are the hooks... they're a dull, galvanized silver and they don't rust. I always replace the stock hooks on those anyway, but it's a nice touch.

I love the simplicity of the spook's design - it's one of my favorite ways to fish.

many saltwater lures work fine for largemouth bass, some actually are some of my best lures

I actually tried throwing a spook tonight. I'm not sure which one I have as far is size is concerned, but is there one that produces better than the others?

Pretty hard to beat a Super Spook Jr for overall production around here. Smallies, spots, and largemouth love them and they're super easy to walk.

There was a killer color spook that was unbeatable but was only available in the saltwater version until a few years ago, and that is nickel! It was around for saltwater and all I did was change out the split rings and hooks, but now the super spook and super spook jr. come in nickel so no need for the saltwater version. The Yo-Zuri banana boat is a killer that not many know about, I have a stash that I bought up when they got discontinued. I have the 1/2oz and 1/4oz jr. model and you wouldn't believe the strikes it generates, much different action than a spook or Sammy, I'm surprised at how many never used it.

Absolutely not.  My favorite topwater spook I only see in the Saltwater Model.  I simply replace the trebles with some nice Mustads.

The gold/orange/black saltwater super spook is a must for freshwater fishing tannic stained rivers here in florida.

Got my first super spook jr. fish today!! Found a school of minnows swimming in the middle of the pond, and casted out past it. About the third pop of my rod, and the spook got completely nailed in the middle of the school! 2lbs. 7oz.. Not bad for a fish on any bait!
