What's The Difference Between Swim Jigs Vs. Casting, Finesse, Flipping, Grass, Football, And Hair Jigs?

I thought all bass jigs were basically swim jigs, meaning you cast them out, let them sink, and then fish them back to the boat however you see fit. But apparently some are swim jigs (I assume for swimming back) and others are for other things such as casting, finesse, flipping, grass and hair jigs.

So what's the difference between Swim jigs vs.  Casting, Finesse, Flipping, Grass, Football, and Hair jigs?

Basically each jig type uses a different shaped head to help it move through the different types of cover easier. A hair jig is just that, has a hair skirt tied on like a fly. Finesse jigs are just smaller, lighter heads for a more subtle presentation.

So they are all swim jigs in the end?

You can "swim" any jig.  However if you are working a jig (especially on bottom)  different heads have been known to give you better success in different conditions/situations.  There is an extensive topic on jigs that is stickied to the top of this forum that will answer this question.

Football jig: its head looks just as it sounds, like a sideways football. These jigs are best in rocks, as the wider head makes them harder to snag up.

Grass Jig: This one can be a tricky one, as there are several different grass jigs. Some are made with essentially a worm weight for there head, wich allows them to be flipped and pitched into places with better penetration AND slides though grass easily. Other grass jigs are punching jigs, wich are made for penetrating thick grass mats in mind. These jigs are often heavy, anywhere from 3/4 oz for thinner mats to 2 1/2 ounces for punching through really thick grass mats.

Swim jigs; essentially any jig can be swimmer. For me, swimming a jig has always been a tactic than a specific lure.

Arky(sp?) jigs: a jig made for skipping underneath docks, laydowns, ect. Use these (with LOTS of practice) any time you want to flip or pitch a jig in scenarios that are otherwise impossible to flip or pitch to.

Hair Jig: just as it sounds, as mentioned above. A jig made with hair or feathers as opposed to plastic. Great for use in winter or when fish are really in a funk during a cold front.

I hope this helps.

Your question is; what is a swim jig? And what is the difference between a presentation and jig type?

A swim jig is a presentation, how you retrieve the jig. A swim jig is retrieved without the jig bottom bumping.

All jigs are casted out and retrieved back by the angler. Flipping is a casting technique. Finesse jig is a skirt design; a coller of skirt material that covers the jig head, usually living rubber skirt. Football is the jig head shape. Grass is bas fishing is aquatic vegetation, grass jig is a jig head that can go into and through grass without becoming tangled with grass. Hair jig is the jig skirt material is made from hair, usually deer buck tail.

I have bought swim jigs and have all the other types as well and the swim jig is set up different to facilitate swimming.  Sure you can swim any style jig but the brush and football head styles don't swim well for me.  You can do it with the grass jigs and it seems to work fine.  the swim jigs i have use a more slender head style, a slightly thinner hook and also have a more swept back design for the weed guard which helps them get through cover better.
