Swivels

Featured Replies

Guys is it OK to put a swivel on the end of my line so its easier to change baits or should I just tie on a new bait everytime

Its fine if thats how you want to fish but beware that snap swivels do fail and it will happen eventually if you use them. And another thing is that a lot of lures actions will be messed up by the swivel ( crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc..) If I were you I'd just take the extra time to tie it on every time it takes little time and the more you do it the faster you do it.

I use ball bearing locking snap swivels on my crankbaits. It acts like a hinge so I get the most side to side movement much smoother.

I use standard locking snap swivels on the Carolina hook end besides were my Carolina rig attaches to my main line on the rod. I have pre made c rigs in different weights. I can change them out fast.

Change out the standard locking snap swivels to be safe but I never broke any yet. I'm sure the knot will wear out so I suggest a retie often more so after bigger fish are caught just to be safe.

Other than when I am using an in-line spinner (which isn't often) or a carolina rig (even less often)  I am not a big fan of snap swivels.  It think that outside of those two applications it is just an unnecessary piece of hardware.   For the most part I trust my knots.

I trust my knots I can't see the line to tie it in the dark so I use locking snap swivels.

You can have a snap without a swivel and a swivel without a snap.  A swivel does not make it any easier to change your baits but a snap sure can.

exactly.

I use a swivel on carolina rigs only.  I use a 30lb snap on my crankbait/topwater set ups.

Would it be better if I just used a snap? I don't think I really need the swivel most of the time

Snaps just make me lazy and end up costing me fish and baits because I don't retie as often when I use them.

I've had like 5 snaps break casting costing me 5 lures. I don't use them anymore.

Good points

Snaps are made in different grades, i use them when i am trying to figure out what they want. I might change crankbaits ten times in a two hour span till I get it what I think they want. Take a look at the owner hyper cross lock. I have snaps that looks like 2lb line and others that look like almost a hook themselves.
