I fish them on 10lb Big Game and have never had any of the issues everyone complains about. A slow retrieve helps as well. 

I was cranking them like I do with the DTs and I had to slow down. The thing would turn on its side and come up. You have to get used to reeling in slower, after that they work like a charm.

This can happen with all crank baits.  It could be that you're reeling to fast.  Or a combination of things. For instance. Trolling motor on high and you cast behind the centerline of the boat.  When you are finishing your retrieve the boat passes the bait and you almost wind up trolling the bait and reeling at the same time.  Sorry if I was confusing.

Seems like you might be throwing it on a 7.0:1 or higher gear ratio. Line size won't really play into it too much unless its 65lb braid. A slow retrieve keeps the bait in the water for me. I throw it on a 6.4:1 and even with that ratio I still need to slow it down a bit to retrieve properly.

For sure. Thats what my hunch was! You literally can't make a 7.0:1 go slow enough for tiny cranks.

I like and fish lots of Rapalas but don't think these were one of Rapala's best ideas.  They will hunt if retrieved at slow speed but any faster and they plane off or spin.  If you think crankbaits should usually be retrieved at a fast pace (and I do), you'll be disappointed.  JMHO, I want a hunting crankbait to run upright at any speed up to Warp 9.  It's super rare to find a bait that can do that, and this isn't one of them.

 

It may help to use heavy wire hooks and/or stick some lead tape on the belly, to make them a bit more stable.  But for sure, if they're misbehaving, you'll have to slow way down.

Got it rigged on a slower gear. What a difference!!!

I started fishing the scatter rap deep diver and I'm loving it, yes slow dat roll and it will get down there.

7:1 was your problem I love mine on 6.4:1 only problem is the pike and rock bass love then too

I use a 3.8 ratio abu and they work fine also use 10 lb big game
