St Croix Mojo Bass

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a st Croix mojo bass slop n frog rod. It feels really nice. However the other day I took it out and when trying to walk the frog it wouldn't dart back and forth. It would just come straight in. Would it be cause of the rod? The frog? Line?

When your walking a hollow body frog, you have to pop your rod tip with slack in the line, otherwise it does exactly what you said; itll just sorta jump with no walking action at all.

It's a beefy rod and not the best for walking.  First and foremost, if you're using braid that's going to be your first obstacle. Braid is so limp that you only need to pop your rod about half as much as you would with a mono line walking the dog.  It can be challenging even for very experienced anglers.  Some times just a jerky retrieve and no rod action can give you that walk effect.  Practice makes perfect.

I have 2 Mojo's in the MH/F (Spinnerbait) which are actually 2 of my frog rods.  I find them to be perfect for 95% of my frog fishing needs.  Not that  you can't use what you have because you certainly can, but a lot of it is because your particular rod is pretty stiff.

You can still get bit not walking a frog as well.  Walking a frog to me is highly over rated and I fish a ton of slop and ideal frog conditions.  Casting the frog into the right locations with great accuracy is far more important in my eyes.  If you chug that frog along in the right spot, they'll eat it.  Walking is great for out in the open or in the alley ways of the weeds.  In those areas, i'd rather throw a spook or sammy.  Having 2 rods rigged is a bonus if you have that luxury.

Make sure you have slack line.  Without slack line it will not walk.  But sometimes a chugging action is what the fish want

Not really answer your question but I'm looking to purchase that rod for my jig/frog/plastic set up on a budget would you recommend that?

I'm a fan of the mojo bass line for moving baits only and I own a few. They're not the most sensitive rods, so I would not use them for jigs or plastics.  Like stated in other threads, there are rods in the $100 price range that are a better rod than the Mojo line.

You've got to be sure to give the bait a little more slack. You want to jerk the rod down softly, and then bring the rod tip right back at the bait. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's not any harder than walking it with a rod with more tip. I absolutely love the backbone of that rod though, such a great feeling when you slam a big one with it.

If you're looking for a more all purpose rod, I'd look at the "Spinnerbait" model instead. It'll be a better match for what you're asking it to do.

Any mh or h depending on brand, st croix a mh has comparable ratings to other company's heavy. Have braid on it.

To answer the op you do need slack line like already stated. And when walking a bait it doesn't need to be an exaggerated movement. I just flick my wrist.

I love the mojo series. My slop in frog rod is pretty dang stiff though. I know its suppose to be but it really is. I also have the top water version and I love it. I use it for spooks. It is so sensitive.

Did you by chance tie a loop knot?  if the knot is tight to the lure it won't walk as easily.

With that said, I love this series of rods, if they would stop breaking on me.  I broke a 2nd 6'8 mojo bass spinning rod today.  The first one the tip broke the day I bought it, catching a 2 lb fish and the replacement broke today, after a little over a month of once a week use, while i was pulling a fish out of submerged wood(a 1.5lb bass).  I wasn't even pulling hard.  I let the line go slack and let the fish work it free.  It might just be the spinning rods because I have the 7'0 Spinnerbait casting rod as well and I love that one and its never given me a problem so far.  It's paired with a Pflueger Supreme 5.4:1 baitcasting reel.  I use it for cranking and spinnerbaits and have been slaying fish with it all of May.  Bass, Crappie, even blue cats have hit squarebills on this rod/reel combo.  I also have a 7'4 glass casting rod on the way as my actual cranking rod with a Pflueger Supreme 6.4:1 reel for the Spinnerbait rod.

I wanted to get the Slop N Frog as a froggin/swimbait rod.  Do you think like the weight of it?  Is it pretty well balanced?
