I Am Determined To Learn To Use Jigs

Featured Replies

My question is where to start. I wish seibert had a starter pack! My fishing grounds are moderately clear and max 25 ft deep.

Don't let all the colors and sizes scare you. There are a couple really good stickies on the top of this page about jig fishing and some great videos on you tube as well. Glenn has some great ones....

For colors and sizes keep it simple....
Black and Blue
Green Pumpkin
Peanut Butter and Jelly

For sizes....
3/8 to 1/2 Oz

I know some like to throw heavier jigs but these are the weights I prefer....

I would start by reading everything I can in the fishing articles, Search jig fishing. You can contact Siebert through the forums and he could lead you in the right direction for a few jigs. You've already made 1 good decision by choosing Siebert for your jigs, He's great to do business with, just remember once you catch one on a jig your hooked. It can put a deep hurt on the wallet LOL.

What about the different heads?

This may sound weird use a 1\4 oz with small trailer , can get more bites when pressure is up for fishing . Go some where you know where fish are even if its pan fish . You will feel what little bites feel like or steady pressure or the occasional rod coming out your hands . WATCH YOUR LINE ... jigs do go opposite the current. I learned this way , soon you will have one tied on all year round.

I like to fish quality tackle and seibert seems to fit the bill

Honestly.. Some may argue with me, but just starting off, I wouldn't worry too much about the head options.. Or colors and sizes for that matter. A simple arkie will do just fine for a starter. Black n' blue. You may not get the hang of fishing with a jig as quickly either, if you start deep. I would maybe focus on shallow targets at first. Any kind of structure you can find. Pitch around docks, grass, trees, limbs, anything you think would hold fish.

Be patient, and dont give up if your not getting strikes right away. Be sure to watch your line also. There are many different ways a bass will take a jig. Anywhere from smokin it, to a subtle tick, to simply sneaking off with your line as your not paying attention. :)

Play around with the retrieves. Swim em, jig em, drag em.. Find out what they like.

Jig fishing is very fun. The first fish is the hardest. After that, its game on. Once you know what to feel for, you'll wear em out!!

Forgot to add; a 5/16 oz jig and 3/8 oz jig will catch a bunch of fish for you off all sizes. The 5/16 oz is great for shallow water and pressured water.

Siebert starter packs. One for clear and one for stained water sounds like a good idea. lol

I would get 3/8 oz because I mainly fish shallower ponds and I don't want the fall rate to be so fast that the fish don't see any action on the fall.

If you could only get one weight, which one would you get and why?

I would get the 3/8 because I just had this email conversation with Mike a couple days ago and he said that was the most popular weight by far.

Black and blue, and green pumpkin have always worked for me. 1/4 oz + a chunky trailer will total in about 3/8 of an oz. Or you can go a bit heavier if you'd like. I use 1/4 because the water I'm fishing in is only about 5-6 feet deep. I like a slow fall for my jigs,

Like any new lure, you start small, gets lots of bites and confidence, then move up to the larger baits.  I recommend using 5/16 and 1/4 oz jigs with 3 and 4 inch creatures baits on back.

Head design in jigs is more of an advanced topic where specific cover types, casting type and retrieve all factor in.  To keep things simple I like a head that encourages the jig not roll over, the trailer to be off the bottom, doesn't get hug up in rocks and dragged on the bottom.

Having taught a few anglers how to fish jigs I have a few questions before we go any further.

1. Describe your rod, reel, line you plan to use.

2. Where do you plan to fish jigs; heavy cover, or casting and retrieving in light cover?

OK, we have a medium fast action baitcasting outfit with ? line, points a and islands preferring to cast and retrieve like a plastic worm in and around weed cover.

The rod isn't ideal, MH would be better. The medium rod limits where you can fish the jig, the weight and hook setting with heavier weight jigs and heavier diameter wire hooks.

My suggestion with your current tackle is going with Yamamoto Hula grub jigs, Owner hook, size 3/8 oz, with weed guard and 4" Hula grubs. This jig is $1.25 ea ($3.60 for 3) plus the double tail Hula grub, excellent combination and price. The jig head is good for your application and good quality, inexpensive enough so you will fish it in harms way.

When you have caught some bass and have a MH jig rod, then consider Sieberts jigs and various trailers.

GY #208 and 221 are good most places.

If this is directed at my post, then the jig head I like is the Buckeye Mop and Mini Mop head.  I like every thing I see in the Siebert jigs better than the Buckeye Mop Jigs, except the head design.  The head and the way that jig fishes is the only reason I pay more for what is, outside of head design, an inferior jig.
