Core 50Mg7 Or Metanium 100 Hg?

Featured Replies

Im looking for a new reel something with good casting distance. Will be using it mostly for 1/4oz-1/2oz topwaters with 20-30lb braid. I like the core 50mg7 but heard its more of a finesse reel and am wonder how the casting distance is. Seems like a pretty small reel would upgrading to the core 100mg7 be better even though I dont plan on throwing any very heavy baits. I can also get the core 80$ cheaper then the Met. Any feedback on these reels only would be great thanks

The met is in a league of its own, that being said I own both and I'm happt using either one.

I highly recommend the Core 50mg7. I also have the 100, but prefer the feel of the 50.

Casting distance is not an issue with this reel, your rod will have more effect. For topwarer

lures I'm using a G. Loomis PR844C.

The Core 50 will do anything you want to do with it and is lighter than the Met.  I bought a half dozen Cores and my only gripe is that they are not as smooth as the Curado 50E's they replaced.

Well, I don't know about that, but I do have a suggestion.

First of all, I had Mike at DVT supertune both a Curado 50E and 200E. They morphed into something VERY close to the Core.

I gave my Core 50 to ghoti. to play with over the winter and he super-dupper tuned it, polishing everything that can be polished!

Full cleaning, new grease and oil, etc. Man...talk about primo.

So, I guess my point is that the Curado series is special, but the Core is an upgrade. You pay a pretty stiff premium for the marginal

improvements, but there is a difference.

Straight out of the box my Cores sounded like they had sand in them.  I suspect a proper cleaning and regrease would do much good.  I'd love to have a few "super tuned", but that will have to wait till the lakes freeze over.  Oh wait, they don't freeze over here, lol.  I'll prob get another box of them this winter so maybe I can send a few out for service then.

Anyway, for me lighter is always better.  It's easier on this old elbow and shoulder plus IMO you get better sensitivity.

Thanks for the help guys. I went with the core and wow this is one small but super smooth reel. It just feels right in my hands and better then my chronarch ci4+ thats for sure. Can't wait to use it.

Why didn't you have them replaced?

Why didn't you have them replaced?

I received them, in Dec. as I remember, directly from the mfg so there was no store to easily return them too.  Tournaments start in earnst around here in mid Jan.  By the time I figured out there was something going on my fishing schedule was pretty booked up.  I run tight on numbers of reels keeping only about 10 baitcasters on hand at a time and most are used every week.  I've had great luck with SA servicing my reels but they tend to be out 6-10 weeks went sent in.  Since the reels are usable, just not as smooth as I expected I chose to live with them until things slow down in the fall.
