Fly and jig making

Featured Replies

I want to start making flies and jigs.  How would I get started? Where would I buy the supplies?  I even thought about making spinner baits, any suggestions on any of this?

For flies and jigs (I assume you mean hair jigs) I recommend getting a starter kit.  BPS sells some for about 50 bucks and you get a vice, tools, materials, unpainted jig heads (or fly hooks, depending on which kit you buy), and an instructional video.  I would be a little weary about using the hooks that come in the kit(I don't know who makes them), but other than that, it's a great deal to get you started.

Hope this helps :)

I'm with Phisher_d on this one, get a starter kit from BPS and once you learn all the basics, like the whip finish, basic wraps, and how to use different materials, then you can begin to create some of your own masterpieces :)

Another vote for the phisher_d post! I have just the vice and like it (wish I would have picked up the kit though, the video probably has some real good tips)! I use it for making bucktail jigs for both smallies and muskies. There's nothing more satisfying than catching a fish with a lure you made. The first batch of jigs I made last year (for musky) landed me my biggest musky of the year!
