Opening weekend is finally here in Upstate New York.  Between buying a new house last fall and coaching boys little league baseball and girls traveling softball I have only gotten out a few times recently and I am really looking forward to putting some of my winter lure acquisitions to the test this Saturday.  I will be fishing a gin clear lake that holds impressive smallies with very little weeds, rocky, sand bottom.  Normally I fish in depths of 6-15' of water.  I picked ups a Duo Spybait and would love to give it a try as this lake seems to be the type of conditions it excels in.  But after doing some reading, lighter is better when it comes to line choices.  I run braid with 10-15 foot leaders on my spinning gear.  I have two choices in leaders to use and was looking for some advise on what would be better to use, or if I should just wait to try the lure when I can get some different leader line.

I usually use 6lb yozuri hybrid, normal, not the soft, or BPS 8lb fluro.

 

What leader line should I use or should I put the lure back in the tackle box until I can get some 4 or 6lb fluro leaders?

 

 

That six pound yozuri should be just fine man

Honestly the spybait needs to sink in order to be effective. The bradi to fluoro leader will hinder the action it is supposed to have. Try going with straight 6 or 8 pound fluoro instead.

I never have problems with the braid to fluro leader and sinking.  I run 10-15' leaders.  I am more so worried that the 8pound fluro will kill the action of the spybait and whether or not the 6lb hybrid will sink correctly being that it is a mono/fluro mix.

The back end of the braid is going to float, ruining your action. But, it will probably work. The fish up in your neck of the woods are probably post spawn and on fire as the water warms. I'd imagine they would be hitting about anything that moves and looks like food. 

It will work with your current setup. Tie it on & watch it sink near the boat, then give it a try.
