Good scents to put on baits...?

Featured Replies

I've never used any types of added scents, but figured It couldn't hurt and if anything, may help catch that one extra fish that wont' seem to bite.

I've been looking around, but there are soooo many to choose from. What works best? I fish Norther California, and fish for 2-8lb bass with mostly 4 and 5 inch Senkos, Hula Grubs, and soon Jigs..

Any suggestions on what brand / scent to get?

GARLIC!!!! its probably the strongest and longest lasting scent you will find.  And bass love it

I use BANG. I like their garlic formula. I've used it for years. I like the aerosol spray can that they offer.

I use Spike-It chartruse dye with garlic scent when I feel the need for a confidence boost.  It does make a difference.  I've also tried Yum and other types, but garlic works the best for me

Hey, yah I'm going to try this , but is there just the scent or does it only come in Dye? I don't want all my baits dyed :) I'm going to order one bottle of that though and try it on some of my baits =)

How often do you guys apply the scent? Only once per day? Once per fish? Depending on casts?

different scents last longer than others...some are sticky, some arent as sticky, depending on the scent is how i make my decesion as far as how often i am applying...of course it wouldnt be too wise to add scent to every cast, because of wasted time applying the scent instead of lines in the water...

Try this.

If you catch a bass with scent, and than take 6 more casts without a strike or another fish, I would add more scent.

I had a chance to speak with Tom Mann sr. at an outdoors show  years ago about this . he said in all his bait testing that the best fish attractant was cod liver oil. I have used it and it works great

Megastrike, Kick-n-Bass, and Power bait liquid are what's in my bag right now. I really don't have a preference. As long as they mask any odors I've added to the baits, I'm happy. A fishin' trip ain't a fishin' trip without a couple of primo, hand made cigars, and I'm convinced that bass do not share my taste for one the finer things in life.

Cheers,

GK

Yum shad scent has worked best for me

Try some Smelly Jelly in the BASS FEAST OR BAITFISH scent.  I would probably pick up some Berkley Erase to remove the scent off of your hands!!

I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added  :)

You can also try a home made formula that someone on the walmart bfl tour told me about.  Get your soft plastics and put them into a zip lock bag.  Then mix in olive oil, vinegar and minced garlic.  Shake it up a little bit and let it sit in the ziplock bag until you are going to use it.

I wouldn't waste my money on scents let alone garlic scents

"Honey, what on earth did you process in my Cuisinart - and why is there dirt all over the floor?"

uh oh!!!

I'm going digging in my backyard for worms to throw in my blender. Then i'll just put it in a jar and bring it fishing. I'll dip my plastics in there!

Sweet!

I was shocked to come across this myself just recently. I have that book and I'm still reading it.

Ok you made me check my worm bag. Baitmate LIVE (gamefish) and YUM Shad/Gaspareau.

KYbass posted that leaving me to wonder why they havent came out with a worm extract formula?

The book is a good read somewhat technical and a little to in depthat times but I would suggest everyone read it.  The book is Knowing Bass the scientific approach to catching more fish by Keith A. Jones PhD, who is the director of fish research at Berkley Fish Research center  If  your serious about fishing you will read this book

Would you add scent to a bait that is already scented? Do you think this will make the bait too flavorable? lol. Like would you put Megastrike on stanley ribbits. (which are garlic scented)?

I use Kick-n-bass garlic, which is 100% pure fish oils spiked with a little garlic.  I don't believe ANY of them actually attract bass, yet erase unwanted smells/tastes and buy me an extra second.

I use it the same way to mask unwanted scents form lures.

While it is true that they will buy you an extra second for the hookset Did you know that they have actually taken cotten swabs diped them in oil and the bass ate it with no apparent side effects and seemed to actually want it.   Natural I really think you would like the book I mentioned on the first page.  I have mentioned it in another post there are a few things bass have been shown to actually dislike and some soaps and detergents are in there but they can not stand DEET that is found in bug sprays
