Spinning Reel Combo For Beginner

Featured Replies

I used to bass fish years ago and am looking to get back into the hobby. Can anyone recommend an affordable (< $75) spinning combo? I was initially looking at the Shakespeare GX2 combo. I have a $50 Dick's Sporting Goods giftcard and can spare a little more. I'm gonna get my other tackle at Walmart or a local fishing shop. I'll probably upgrade at some point next year.

Check out the Pfluegar Trion combos, probably the best you can get in that price range.

the gx2 would be your best choice for a extremely good reel and pole.

The Mitchell Avocet Gold sets are good for the money. I actually really like the reel and the rod is serviceable.

My local Walmarts never have anything good on sale.  I'd check out Dick's sale items.  I usually buy my crankbaits from Dick's for less than what I can at Walmart, but I almost always buy only sale items.  A $15 lure for $10 is a pretty good deal in my book.  We have an Ollie's Bargain Outlet nearby.  I bought a ton of plastics for much less than I could anywhere else.  Mostly bought all Zoom plastics.

+1 for the Pflueger Trion combo. I have been pleasantly surprised with mine. Or if you want to spend a little more, get a Pflueger President reel and pick out a rod to go with it.

Thanks for all the input! What would be the best rod length and strength? I've read 6.6 ft and medium heavy. I'm going to be starting off using spinnerbaits and plastic worms.

As for the length, it depends on the trees and access to the water. If there is a lot of crap in the way, you may want lean toward the 6'6. If not then the 7' M or MH would be a good choice.

A Pflueger President with a 7' M or MH rod with fast action of your choice that fits your budget.  I have three Presidents on different rods and find they're more than worth the money - easy to cast & really smooth.

Best of luck with your choice.

I ended up picking up a 6.6 medium ugly stik and a pflueger trion. They didn't have any decent combos. Only thing about the rod is the large bottom ring is slightly slanted. Not sure if that matters. Should I return it? I didn't notice it until I got home.

Na. As long as the inside of the eye is smooth and won't catch your line it will be fine. You can probably just gently bend it back into place.
