Changing Jitterbug Hooks

Featured Replies

I recently picked up 2 large jitterbugs and 2 small jitterbugs in black. As most everyone knows, the hooks that come on them are trash. I don't have any experience with replacing hooks on lures, so does anybody have any suggestions as to what hook?

4's and 6's. Gamakatzu Round Bend Short Shank. (Magic Eye optional). I also add split rings for better hook rotation.

DO NOT UNSCREW THE HOOK HANGER !

Add a drop of super glue to the hanger where it joins the body

CUT THE HOOK

Add a split ring and place your new hook,

Sorry Raul, I do remove the hook hangers. Into the holes go screw eyes to which the hooks are attached. I also unscrew every screw on the lure and put super glue in the hole before replacing the screws. I can tolerate losing any lure except the Jitterbug because it's time consuming and a pain in the butt to make the modifications.

Whether or not you cut the old hook, or remove the hanger you'll want to add a split ring. I personally prefer standard length shanks on the front aned either go with the next size down or a short shank on the back to keep them from tangling. I replace most of my trebles every off season, so I opt for Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp for cost reasons.

I modify mine the same way Zell does, it's a little work and well worth it i don't keep those rigid hangers!

What sizes of split rings, hooks and eyes do some of you guys prefer and for which size jitterbug? My experience was that the split rings wouldn't completely swing freely when leaving the stock hook hangers on the lure.

Thanks!
