How To Rig A Fish Finder On A Kayak

Featured Replies

I have a sit-in Old Town Vapor Angler kayak and would like to install a fish finder. I don't want a permanent mount on the bottom of my kayak, because I often do float trips on shallow creeks where we drag our kayaks across shallow gravel. I want to avoid issues with breaking off a transducer.

Let me know how you would recommend rigging a fishfinder/transducer. Also, what type of battery do you use? I have some 12v decoy batteries that sit until duck season that may be perfect for a fish finder.

Maybe a Ram Mount transducer arm and a portable cased fishfinder?  Easy enough to remove when you want to go without it.

That's what I'm looking for. Something that I can easily leave behind when I don't need it. I've seen some pictures online of home-made mounts with PVC and battery cases. Thought about going that route, but curious what you yak anglers on this forum have had success with.

I used the platform and folding arm  on my first yak and it worked well as well as being completly removeable in 5 min. I specifically used the Liberator mini from Hook One kayak. I attached it with the 4" or 8" rail and T bolts.

You could shoot it through the hull.  A lot of guys do that, but the only downside is that you loose proper temp readings.  Would not have to worry about it getting banged up and don't have to worry about something hanging over the side and getting caught on tree branches, poles, etc.  I have a sit-on-top so don't have to worry about it, but if I was in your situation that is probably the route I would take.

I shoot thru hule..  End of day i just take the fish finder off from the harness but leave everything in the hule.

temp readings will be within a degree or so thru the hull once the hull gets the same temp as the water

Sounds like through the hull is best option. How are you guys rigging your battery and what type of battery?

I bought fleet farm 12 volt battery.  I Put the battery in waterproof box from plano, drill holes to fit power wires.  I Fit wires thru, use silicone to seal the hole.  I pushed the battery box as far up the bow as i could to a point where it barely moves.  After that use Duct Seal to seat it in place in and around the corners for less movement.  Also make sure you have some support in the battery box so the battery doesn't flap around in there.   I have mine like this for now.  Works for me
