Backing Knot

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

So I use 12lb mono as my backing for everything. I also tie a double uni knot to connect the main line and backing, the issue is that after a while of losing line, my line will start to catch on the knot. Does this happen to anyone else? What I do know is that when I respool this fall I will definitely add more main line to my spool than I did. So do any of you have tips or tricks about backing?

PS: I pretty much use fluoro.

You can try wrapping electrical tape around the backing.  Tie your FC over the tape.  Eliminates the knot completely.

That sounds like it'd work, but wouldn't that be deadly if you ran into your backing fighting the bass of a lifetime

Id use old braid as backing and connect your flouro with an alberto knot.

I don't use so much backing that I ever get down to the knot.  If I start getting close it's time to respool.  FWIW I normally use a blood knot to attach my main line to the backing.

I like to use braid as backing as well but I use a uni to uni knot

I use spinning and connect the line to the backing with a uni-to-uni knot. It always seemed that during use the knot migrated outward. I cover it with that blue painter's tape. I use a lot of backing, leaving room for 60 or so yards of good line and have never gotten down to the knot, even when foul-hooking a big carp that makes long runs. If big carp don't run far enough to get down to the knot, then I can't see a big bass even getting close.

WM has a cheap Zebco line I use as backing (10lb. to 15lb. ) which I use on spinning and baitcast ...It is lightweight and soft and never a problem with a double uni to FC or Braid ... If the knot begins to be a problem then it's time to respool your top shot of line !

I agree

I also tape on my backing and then tie on the primary line.  It results in a little bity knot.  I only fish for bass, but I have never even come close to spooling my line with a fish "running away".

If I'm using mono backing and floro as a main line I just use a piece of electrical tape. If braid is my main line I'll use a modified albright to connect the two. I put about half a spool of each line on and I've never let the line get so low that the knot becomes an issue.
