Painting Jigs

Featured Replies

Im planning on making some jigs flippin, finesse and swim jigs. I have a few questions as far as paint goes. What is the best method of painting jigs? Powder coat, spray or other? Also the finish for these jigs should i use an enamle? One last thing, When i mold the jig and i have to put the weed guard in do i mold it into the jig or put it in after the jig is painted?

This is probably the wrong way but I use spray paint and then 2-ton epoxy clearcoat.  I don't like the powdercoat.  I think it chips way too easy.  Then again, application of the jig is important.  I drag mine across rocks and off ledges.  For flipping, pitching and swimming, powdercoat is probably fine.

Also, with the spray paint, you can make some cool designs with multiple colors.  You can't do that with powdercoat.

As for the guard, I think you can do it both ways but if you glue it in, I think there has to be a little cavity there.  I don't have much experience because I don't believe in weedguards on jigs (in most cases).

Powder coat em for sure.Once you bake the powder coat,it is very durable. You can also get some great accent sparkles with powder coat, that u would have a real hard time duplicating with spray paint.

im still wondering about the brush guards though i don't have the molds yet so i don't know do i have to put the weedguards in before i pour the lead or could i do it after it's poured how does that work? thanks for the input on the paint! i think im going to do some expirimenting with both methods.

With the molds that I have you have the option of placing the weedguard in the mold before pouring the lead, or glueing the weedguard after pouring the lead

Here is what I do

I mold them with the pin

Paint them with a different pin in it to fill the weed guard hole

Remove the pin with pliers

Heat cure

epoxy in the fiberguard

Its a long drawn out process but thats how I get the best paint job and the straightest fiber guards.  I have tried the mold in process but they shrivel up and the when heat cured with a fiber guard the also shrivel up.

I mold jigs with fiber weed guard in the mold  without any problems. However I paint mine with a brush using vinyl jig paint. Time consuming but paint holds up well........Al
