Black Lake Ny Or Lake Oneida

Featured Replies

I am looking to plan a trip this September, and not sure which lake to choose... I am looking to target LM / SM.... Any input would be great.

I know Oneida is better known but for a trip like this I would go with Black Lake. It is a lot smaller so would be easier to break down to find a pattern and tons of good SM and LM.

Two totally different types of lakes. Oneida is big and has some depth. Black is shallow and super weedy for the most part. For me, Black is easier to figure out and get on some fish fairly easily. Both are capable of putting up a memorable trip if you hit it right.

Ive fished Black Lake before and it was awesome. Not really known as a smallmouth lake, but middle of the summer we killed the smallies. Most around 15-19". Never fished Onieda but I would absolutely go back to Black.

Jar11591, same here on the smallies. I was up there at the end of July for years (not this year), did well the first year and made reservations to go back the same time the following year before we left. The second year was insane fishing every day the whole week. We would fish from smallies during the day then go for some crappie the last hour or so of light so we could have a fish fry. Love the place, now that college is done I am trying to go back up next year.

If you go to Black shoot me a PM. Incredible fishery in my backyard.

I've fished both. If I was going on vacation, Black Lake. If I was going fishing, Oneida. Both are great fisheries.
