Book selection question

Featured Replies

well i never knew about rod building or lure making until i joined this site and stated looking through these post and i really wanted to do it. i like to make stuff on my own that is usable. I trap and i took a big coon i caught and tanned it my self and had my grandma help me sew it into a hat. i just like to have something that has a story behind it. but anyway i went to a link reel mechanic gave in one of the sticky post and i found that there is a place that sells rod building and lure making less than an hour away from me. Its called janes netcraft and they dont carry the book reel mechanic recommended so i was wondering which one of the books you would reccomend.

Here is the link

You can't go wrong at Jann's!  I love their store and their employees will answer any and all questions you have.  Most information can be found on the web.  I would suggest that you start there, decide what you want to make and purchase some play things from Jann's and wait for a while on the books.  You can invest more in the play things that way :)  and most often you can find a website that will answer any questions you have!

I second that notion, especially with sites like tackleunderground.com around.

portageriverangler,

Here is the direct link to the book that I recommended, it is the publishers website and you can order it direct from them....

Rod Building Guide

Tight Lines!!

i'm just "jumping in" here, hope not to offend anyone.

let me tell you guys.  we have one of the absolute BEST sources of information on the entire internet Right Here!  it is ReelMech.  David has done it all, he has written about it & he shares it Freely!

these other books are Great!  i've bought some of them, have subscribed to their forums & their magazines, but, when it comes right down to "need to know"  i have no further to go than right HERE!

ReelMech & Flechero have helped me more than they'll ever know.  ...and, they'll help you as well. ...and, so will i, but, my knowledge is so limited compared to theirs.

if you'll look at some of the "stickies" & some of the articles  that really tell you the important things, you'll find they were written or, answered, by reel mech.

Go to his website & Check It Out

justtrying,

Don't know what to say after that..... :)

But here is the link to my rod site..

DG Rod Works

Since I don't offer to build customs from on-line orders anymore, the site is mainly informational now.

i just finished reading it and it cleared everything up. its got my really pumped to start working on a rod. i want to make an ultralite rod. im not sure what size i think around 6 ft. i like longer rods they make fighting fish more fun but i need a short enough rod i can bank fish the river i live by. I want to do a decoratrive butt wrap but i dont want to do a diamond i want something unique. if anybody has a wrap suggestion and what book i can find it in for a unique but not to complicated wrap i would appreciate it.

thanks

That's ambitious!! I wanted to try a weave on one of my early rods but as I read up on it, I realized I probably wasn't ever going to have THAT kind of patience.

"Not to complicated" for one of the thread artists is a very different thing than it is for us regular guys. I hope you can find something... if you search on RBO you'll find links to several open and closed wraps and some "basic" weaves of fish, T-Birds, etc. To me even the most basic seems difficult when I try to lay out the thread. :-/ One more thing... the smaller diameter the blank the harder it is to do the weaves and patterns.

Good luck with it, and let us know if we can be of any help. (on anything but decorative thread work!) ...lol
