Where Does The Rapala Scatter Rap Fall In The Pantheon Of Lure Success?

I hear a lot about the KVD 1.5 and other lures. I've had a lot of success with the Rapala Scatter Rap Shallow in Smash color. I've found it works in open water but also works so well if you can cast it up near a dock or beneath it and start retrieving. I've had so many fish swim out from underneath docks to smash it. I was just wondering where the Rapala Scatter Rap falls in the pantheon of lure success?

Is it considered a great lure, good lure, or bad lure?

A lot of people don't like it, but a lot of people do like it. I think the reason is that it hasn't been around for long enough to set a reputation like some other Rapalas have done. It works great for me though.

I like it but it is a specific situation type lure for me.  I think the people that don't like it are trying to toss it into the same places they would a square bill and it isn't that type of bait. I am not gonna throw a zara spook on top of matted grass and the come out and say it sucks and doesn't produce but it seems like that its he case with the scatter rap for some reason.

I am not sure really, I have not used it, there are, as was stated above, as many hate it as love it. I want to pick up a couple in Gold Foil.... And try them... But I just have my cranks so dialed in I just don't know whether or not I would benefit from it.

I can count with the fingers of one hand how many bad lures Rapala has made and would still have fingers left to continue the count, in my book the only bad Rapala I´ve encountered is the Long Cast Minnow, oh yeah, it flies through the air like a bullet but the itsy bitsy teeny tiny lip is really fragile.

So you be the judge how good any lure that has stamped Rapala on it, that also includes Blue Fox and Storm.

I like them, especially in more open water. They do go out of tune easily and that can be frustrating. I also prefer a spinning rod as its a lil light for a baitcaster.

I have yet to catch a single fish on them, but the action is good when reeled slowly with a slow ratio reel. I haven't fished them a whole lot, both in waters though where cranks only work well in certain situations.

Bait monkey made me buy 2 of them at Dick's sale the other night, based on positive reviews on here.  I've only thrown it from shore once and only a few casts to get a read on its retrieval.  Will definitely be trying it more in the coming days, didn't feel like a good idea today when I had a lot of weeds or grass at or near the surface when casting from the boat.

I like them but like others stated it's more of an open water bait IMO. It will bounce off cover pretty well, but they provide their own action while they're wandering all over the place. They're great over the tops of weeds too.

Being a lure builder myself, I tried a couple of the Scatter Shads and was somewhat disappointed since the hunting action was only apparent on a slow retrieve and the lures blew out with a fast retrieve, which I want to use more often.  The ideal hunting crankbait will hunt at any speed, including warp speed without blowing out.  They're rare and difficult to build, but that's what I want.  I'm otherwise a big fan of most Rapala crankbaits.

I always thought scatter occurs when its retrieved faster

when I retrieve slow there is very little hunting

Either way, I saw and interview with KVD where he said they built his cranks so that they are more unpredicatably wobbling.. sounds alot like an attempt at scatter to me.. I think scatter rap scatters much better than KVD but only at higher retrieve speeds

and its not really a higher retrieve speed per se.. its a quicker retrieve almost a sudden off-speed  quicker jerk retrieve which starts a scatter

Which KVD 1.5 is similar to the Scatter Rap? The 1.5 shallow?

The Scatter Rap Shallow is the best one from all the Scatter Raps for me. I've caught quite a few bass a few years ago on the shallow. I don't use them these days except a couple times last month and landed a bass. The local lakes to me, the weeds are 2-3ft from the surface, so even the shallow Scatter Rap would not work.

Open water for sure for the shallow Scatter Rap.
