What Lures Not To Use Braid With

Featured Replies

I was trying to decided if I could fish a buzzbait on my favorite rod because it has braided line on it. Would you fish a buzzbait with braided line? What about Jerkbaits? What are the lures that you wouldn't fish on braided line because braided line doesn't stretch? Thanks for any help.

I'll use anything on braid

X2...I'm not scared

The only time I don't use braid are with lures that rotate 360 degrees, only 2 I can think of and they are not used in freshwater.  I have re designed one of the lures using a ball chain swivel and now use braid with it without any exaggerated line twist for the last 8-10 months.

Some people don't care to use braid with an inline spinner, I do without any problems with or without a BB swivel.  I'd say I use braid with anything for any species nearly 100% of the time.

You can fish any lure on braid. Most guys only fish single hook lures with braid. If you choose to fish treble hook baits on braid you need to have some give in the system. Either looser drag or moderate action rods and or an attached leader will help put a little stretch or give in the system so you don't rip hooks out.

As long as you tie a good Palmor knot and use suffix 832 advanced braid (and not the spiderwire crap braid) then you're not gonna lose it on a fish

I use braid on everything from Texas rigs to crankbaits... Using a leader when needed

I use braid for just about everything when bass fishing.  I'll use a fluoro leader w/soft plastics, cranks and jerks.  My favorite aspect of braid is that I have never lost a lure b/c of a knot or my line breaking; w/the cost of terminal tackle and lures these days braid will save you a good amount of money on those days when you just can't hit your spots when casting.

Thanks for the help! I will fish my buzzbait on braided line today. I wanted to fish it on that rod but I had heard once that it isn't good to use braid with a buzzbait because it doesn't stretch. What about fishing with a topwater lures like a popper? What line would you use for poppers?

I use braid for poppers, just remember that with zero stretch all the give must come from your rod and drag.

It makes having the correct rod and drag setting that much more important

This gentleman is on point.

The only lures that I won't fish with straight braid are prop baits. This is because when you pop your rod and the lure moves forward the front "blade" or prop runs into you line and then wraps itself effectively ruining the cast. I always use a copoly leader with these type top water baits. Pretty much anything else is up to you, I'm a big braid guy so lots of my fishing is done with braid without any type of leader.

I always use a leader with braid on all my lures, getting braid tangled around a treble is time consuming to unravel.  My leaders are in the 18-20" range, too short for any significant stretch.  Been doing it so long this way my reflexes are adapted, don't use different rods for treble and single hooks, drag is set just tight enough for hookset.

I don't like to use braid with crankbaits.  For spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and buzzbaits braided line is excellent in my opinion.

depends on where you're fishing.  where i fish everyone always has some sort of leader of 10lb or less fluorocarbon for crank baits, jigs, texas rigged.  but when i fished the potomac years ago , i always just used braid.  depends on where you fish.

NEVER EVER fish braid with medium to large sized soft swimbaits. It is the worst choice of line there is for them. Braid cuts through large soft plastic baits very easily. I tell guys this all the time and I see the results of braid cut baits many times.

And one good backlash and that heavy swim bait is sailing through the sky...
