Bass Bait Before Sunset

Featured Replies

Hey guys!!! What's the best bait before sunset, at a private pond? Thanks!!!!

Buzzbait and frogs at the pond I go to.

Topwaters, especially poppers, buzzbaits, rage shads, and spooks.

Topwater or wake baits

The ponds I go to I have better luck in the evening using some sort of stick bait, such as Rage-Tail Thumpers or a Shim-E fished wacky style. At times I use a Ned's rig. I have tried the other mentioned things with no luck, maybe it's a confidence thing for me.

Sweet. Thank you guys!!! I've got some gear to get, and learn about, but sounds like fun. Some gear I've heard about, some I'm clueless. Loving it!!!

Pop-Rs and buzzbaits usually produce.

Frogs can too but you may lose too many fish with faulty hook sets.

Topwater... but don't wait too long to try something else if not working...not sure size of pond but after 15 min. or so and no strikes...go to something else

Wakebaits and jitterbugs!

Before dark while it's still light. Example, I use a joesfly 1/4oz bass size in blackgnat. Let's say the bass bite is on all different sizes. As it starts to get dark the bite slows to a hault. I switch to a joesfly 1/4oz firetiger apache and land a few more bass till dark.

The basses eyes adjust to the change in light faster than the bait fishes eyes at this time that's the reason for the bass eating frenzy.

My hottest evening baits have been;

Joesfly in blackgnat & firetiger apache.

Spooks chartreuse and white.

Mepps inline spinner Anglia #3 silver blade gray tail.

Strike king inline spinner #3 silver blade black/yellow tail.

Mister Twister Top Prop in fire tiger.

Remember what works at night also works in the early am too.

Jitterbug - extremely effective and a whole lot of fun.

i always throw topwaters before dark, also i dont use spinnerbaits very often anymore but at dusk a 1/2oz spinnerbait with a swimbait trailer is money!

Spinnerbaits for me.

Poppers and walking baits for me. If I throw out a walking bait and it get's bit before I start working it, I'll change to a popper. If the popper get's bit when I'm working it aggressively, I'll change to a walking bait. If neither works, I'll just go home.:)

I have had good luck with a frog popper at dusk. Specifically Booyah poppin pad crasher and Spro popper.

Black buzzbait and hold on to the rod tight!!!!

I like to use swim jig before sunset, it works very well here. But topwater is money right after run rise, and pitch a beaver works very well.

Pop R type baits.. In the 1/4 oz range also Traps run along weed lines are effective.

Just before sunset is the time I like best, still too hot now so I won't be doing it for a while.  At times I have a lot of floating grass, weedless fluke fished as top water lure works real good for me.
