To avoid the long story, I'll just say I've ended up with two identical rods. I bought one and now have had one given to me. I bought it specifically for deep crankin. It's a Duckett 7'11" MHM crankin stick. I spooled 10lb Sunline fluorocarbon on a Lews 5:4.1, in it and it's a great deep cranking rod. Now, what to use the other one for is my question. What other application could I use that rod (I gotta get a reel yet) for? I'd hate to just have that nice rod just sitting around not using it. I was thinking about big jigs, spinnerbaits, buzz baits etc, but thought they'd need more of a fast tip, right? HELP! Lol

I can't think of another application that I prefer a Mod action for. It would be some kind of moving bait, slash baits like the X-Rap maybe or deep slow rolled spinnerbaits. If it were me, I'd sell one and replace it with something for a presentation I didn't already have a rod for.

Spinnerbaits, blade baits, buzz, squarebill, rattle-trap style baits. Find a 6:1 ratio reel and spool it with 15-20lb FC or Mono.  Let the rods moderate action help with these baits as stiffer rods tend to pull the baits away from the fish when we set the hook. Now you have a deep crankin rod and a shallow muti use crankin/blade rod.

I'd sell it, that is a deep diving crank rod, it is too long and would make tough square bill fishing and while you can fish spinnerbaits with a moderate action that would probably be better suited for the 1oz ledge buster type spinnerbaits so even those would be specialized. Sell it and get something else you can use or take it with you and use it for a different deep diving bait so you don't have to retie if you want to switch baits.

How many rods can you accomodate on the deck of your boat  ?

 

I don´t see any problem having several crankbait rods each one with a different crank.on the deck of my boat.

A rod of that length, power and action is, by conventional wisdom, a fairly application specific tool. But, since you have it, why be conventional?

 

Try it for other purposes. You might like it. You won't know until you give it a shot.

 

Some suggestions? big spinnerbaits, c-rig, small swimbaits, swim jigs, frogs and toads,

 

I have several rods with decals listing the intended applications. I call those "fishing for dummies" stickers, and ignore them.

 

Another point to consider is, that particular moderate action rod could well be a moderate-fast action, in which case you may have a lot more versatile stick. There is no standard and every rod maker's version of moderate action is a bit different.

7'11" mhm.

Hmmm. ... big spinnerbaits, swimbaits?, big flutter spoons. Second crank rod for when you are really on them. ....
