Just One Or Both

Featured Replies

I fish strictly with spinning gear, and know there's bait casting as well but is there much difference if any or not? never used one and if i was to get one how long would it take to learn? i'm a pretty fast learner also ,but say spending about 150.00 or 175.00 what would you suggest ? cause you get what you pay for!

There is nothing wrong with fishing strictly with spinning gear.  i know a bunch of tournament anglers who refuse to go to baitcaster.

A baitcaster takes time to learn.  Practice, practice, practice.  If I were to recommend one I would recommend the Abu Garcia Silver Max combo ($80).  That is what I started with.

Why baitcasters ... here are some reasons for me.

1 - Flippin and Pitchin - Higher gear ratio.  Better control of each flip and pitch to specific targets using your thumb.  Clumsy to do with spinning IMO.

2 - Topwater - Lures like the Sexy Dawg/Zara Spook.  Better control of the lure for that walking action.

The only con is with finesse techniques.  I still prefer spinning for things like drop shot, mojo rig, weightless senko etc.

$150 -170 just on the reel ?

I own both, despite all you hear IMHO, you don´t "need" baitcasting gear. Spinning gear is more convinient than baitcasting gear for a simple reason, with spinning gear you can cast without needind enough room to swing the rod, you can cast to a good distance in very tight quarters, also, you can cast very light baits without much effort, spare spinninf reel spools are cheaper than BC spools, get some spare spools and you are ready for almost anything. My foot patrol setup is spinning.

But as they say, it´s your money.

I'm a lot more accurate with a baitcaster... But spinning rods are a lot more user friendly.

BC is the way to go imo. I think the greatest advantage at least for me is controlling the casting distance. I know some guys who say they can control distance pretty good on spinning but it's way easier on BC.

Plus the use of heavier line and not having to open and close a bale 100+ times. Click, cast engage you're in business.
