Quantum Smoke Users- New Reel, And Weak Drag 5

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the quantum smoke 101HPT. While it casts, and retrieves very smoothly. I am unsure of the drag. The specs claim 15lbs of max drag, but when I crank it all the way down, I can still pull line. I never crank it all the way down, but I just wanted to make sure that the drag was working properly.

Just wanted to get the opinion of other smoke users. If not, is there anything that can be done to help with this problem? I don't want to buy new washers, because I can just exchange it.

If you're running straight braid without backing, it could be the braid slipping on the spool.

If you're not, then there could be an issue. When I had a Smoke, I did not experience any issues as you've described.

Don't have this problem with mine but it's possible that it just might be over lubed & needs a clean up.

Thanks guys, I took the reel apart and it was definetely over greased. The washers were installed incorrectly. When I made sure they were facing outwards, (), it made it a little better. However, it claims to have 17lbs of drag and when it is all the way cranked down, It only produces about 6lbs of drag. I think I'm gonna pay cabelas a little visit and swap it out.

A lot of companies over rate there drags by A LOT, especially Abu Garcia with the Gen 3 revos.

6-7# of actual drag is good for up to 20# mono. More than enough for bass fishing. If you suspect a problem though, better safe than sorry.

Only 7 lbs.? I broke a 5 power Dobyns Champ X at the grip on a hookset this weekend. Drag was set at about 4.5 lbs. Good luck getting to that claimed max resistance stat.

Look, I know 7lbs is more than enough for bass fishing. However, if it is a brand new reel, and with the drag cranked all the way down, shouldn't it be providing more than 7lbs? Especially when they are claiming between 15-17. Thanks for the great advice..

Yeah I suspect the drag washers are probably crushed. I just wanted to make sure, and by the responses, I am right that there is an issue. I'll just go swap it out
