Misses With A Kvd Sexy Dawg

Sometimes fish hit this lure and miss it. I've had a few bass miss it which is normal.

However I've had about 10 hits on it by muskies and never caught one. About 3 times it seems that they weren't even close to it. The other times they should have been stuck. One time today I had a good one hit it and it went about 2/3 out of the water and then went under. I set the hook and felt the fish. I reeled about 3 cranks and then it got off. Today I also had one musky bite 3 separate times in 5 minutes fully leaping out of the water each time. It must of only been about a 5-6lbs. musky. This is the time a musky lure would be good. I've used a Cabelas Tournament ZX heavy rod with a Revo Rocket and 30lbs. Power Pro.

I'm wondering if the hooks are too small. But the KVD Sexy Dawg gets them to bite. Does anyone know of a similar lure for muskies that would work but isn't too expensive?

I don't want to get into muskie fishing. Just one floating muskie lure like the KVD Sexy Dawg for when the muskies are biting while I'm bass fishing.

Those are small hooks for a muskie, which are hard fish to hook anyways. If you're looking to target muskie with one you might just get a regular Spook and upgrade the hooks. There's lots of muskie sized walking baits like a Poe's Giant Jackpot, but you'll need heavier gear to toss one. Muskies are notoriously aggravating with topwaters. I've never managed to hook one on topwater, but I've had some of the most impressive explosions and acrobatic strikes I've ever seen with them.

I hooked about a 36" muskie with a Ragetail Toad good but he broke the swivel snap.

I'll look into the Poes. Thanks.

Upgrade the hooks and make sure you set the hook HARD. Don't forget the leader either.

To what hook and what size?

But the KVD Sext Dawg

Is that where you send the fish a provocative picture in the hopes they'll just jump right in the boat to party?

I heavy action rod with braid seems like a bit much for a walk the dog type bait.

It does, but the ZX rods all feel like a weightclass less then they are. So a heavy feels like a medium heavy.

Muskies have hard mouths are are notoriously difficult to get hooks into and that when they even bother to open their mouths instead of just following and staring the heck out of it.  My best hookup bait for muskies is the bonus fish I catch on shakey head Flappin Hogs.  Go figure.  Don't let muskies sway you one way or the other on the performance of a bass bait.

Muskies are awesome so if you have a bait they want to put into their mouths, desperately try to make it so you can hookup.  As others have said, try bigger sharper hooks, big braid and a powerful rod.  You can try a flipping stick or a big swimbait rod out of your arsenal but if you have muskie willing to bite, go get yourself a muskie rod and some muskie topwaters.

Man I wish my muskies ate bass topwaters instead of Flappin Hogs.  I got like a hundred bucks in unused muskie topwaters that I would be throwing.
