White Spinner Bait Blades

Featured Replies

Has anyone had much success with white blades? What conditions/situations do you find most favorable for using them?

I'm a big fan of white - the blades and the bait.  Call it white on white and I prefer to BURN IT - Fast.

I use a heavier spinnerbait, usually 3/4 ounce or so.  I put undersized single or double white willow leaf blades on it, a quality trailer hook and use a high speed casting reel loaded with 30 or 40 lb braid.

During the mid to late summer, and even early fall, on wind blow points and big flat near deep water on clear water lakes, I'll burn this bait just under the surface.  Smallies will race up and Blast it !  It's fun.

I can get lmb on it as well going over shallow weed just have to slow it down a little, still relatively quick just not as fast as the smb like it.

White, yellow, or one of each is my favorite spinnerbait to throw for smallmouth.

A-Jay, are there certain weather conditions you look for? Overcast & breezy, clear & calm? Or, all of the above?

  • Super User

Yes, sometimes, always. Lol.

I grab mine more often in clear water, but that's not a huge factor.

Where I Fish, white colorado blades, and a white skirt seem to work best when the water is muddy.

Everything in my experience has shown me that painted blades of any color help to mute the amount of flash put off by the blade.  The same can be accomplished with hammered blades, or by changing from silver to either gold or brass colored finishes.

The only way to determine what the fish are looking for in your area is to try different combinations during the many types of weather or seasonal patterns you run up against.  Success will tell you which choices work on the lakes you fish.

Never used black but have used colors like black, yellow, and red and they work!

I always have a spinnerbait tied on.. but its almost never the white

I've found the natural colors have performed better and some yellow in stained.. blade colors plain silver and gold work best with gold in stained
