I've had bass miss buzzbaits and my KVD Sexy Dawg before. Normally I quickly make another cast past it and try to catch it again. If that doesn't work then I grab my spinning rod which is usually set up with a Senko or Super Fluke and toss it to where the strike was.

 

 

 

I was wondering if I should instead quickly toss a Senko or Super Fluke or something at the spot where the miss was instead immediately rather then try another pass with the original lure first.

When a bass misses my top water lure I usually cast it out again. However it usually doesn't get hit again. If I were to throw another lure out though. I would throw something with a different action to your previous lure. Your strategy makes sense to me, I think I'll try it.

typically for me it's a senko, t rig trick worm or a jig.... really all depends on which of those set ups is closest or handy to throw....

have had the best luck getting that second strike with the t rig trick worm...

I use to use a fluke for this but the Senko is now the go to because it sinks faster and I found that little faster sink gets them to react better.

I did try immediately throwing a Senko out there once after a missed hit and caught the bass. I've also done it and not gotten anything.

I am using a fluke, trick worm, or rage/speed craw when following up a top water strike... I don't always do it though. If bites are hard to come by that day I'll have a follow up bait, if not then I don't worry about it...

I use something that matches the profile and colour of the topwater I was using. For example if I was using a 4" bone coloured walking bait, I would cast back with a 4" white Senko. And I rarely ever make a cast back with a topwater if they miss it, I normally throw back immediately with a follow-up bait.

Senko, Trick Worm, or a weightless Ugly Otter.   If I still get nothing, then maybe I'll cast out a half-stick of dynamite.  

Depends on the day. If they are very aggressive and striking often then I usually toss the lure at least one more time. Otherwise my senko is at the ready for any miss.

If they completely missed it there's no reason why to throw something different right after. Now if it caught onto the lure and came off then you should follow up with something else.

I actually had a miss today on my 2nd cast with a KVD Sexy Dawg. I set the hook and the lure went about 6" inches. I let it sit and then gave it a twitch after about 5 seconds and it hit again.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I've fished this lake for 6 years and didn't know that it had smallmouth in it. This was about a 1lber.

I very rarely throw my same lure that they just missed back over them. I usually follow up with a Fluke or a Zoom tube. Or with frogs, I'll sometimes throw a Havoc Pit Boss. 

I usually cast the same bait back at them. If they don't hit it on the cast back then I might toss a wacky rig at them if it looked big enough.

I am trying the "throw a different bait" technique but am not seeing good results.

In nature, a missed strike would lead to the critter that almost got eaten, booking it out of there.

Following this logic, the same lure should be thrown back but retrieved faster.

The way it was explained to me is that after a miss the bass will typically head straight to the bottom, and following up with a soft plastic bait gives them an opportunity to hit something while their feeding trigger is still in the "on" position.

I suppose throwing the same lure back will also work, but I've had no reason to try it since the soft plastics after the miss have worked very well for me.
