Baitcasting Problem, Help Please!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I've recently came back to the fishing scene after a six year break. I've been fishing with spinning rods all of my life, but I've decided to switch over to baitcasting. A few weeks back, I traded a striped bass and twelve pack of beer for a Pflueger Purist reel. I'm having an issue with the thumb bar. When I press down on the thumb bar, it locks into position. Once I cast, the thumb bar immediately locks back into the up position, not allowing me to make a cast. Can anyone help me with this problem? I've posted images of it.

I can't see anything obviously broken or missing other than the disassembled parts. Are you saying that when you depress the thumb bar it pops back up locking the spool? The position you have pictured is the clutch disengaged putting the reel in free spool.

After you make a cast, when does the thumb bar lock in the up position? If it stays locked in the up position, but you're able to retrieve line it sounds like a part may be missing. If the reel locks up completely a part may have been replaced incorrectly. If you can get a schematic, check it against your pics. Otherwise I'd either take it to, or send it to a repair shop.

Don't know much about Pfluegers, this doesn't happen to have a "flippin swtch" on it does it?

Yes, thumb bar pops back up, locking the spool. It only happens when I make a casting motion. The images show both, thumb bar up and down.

The thumb bar locks back into position immediately. I can still retrieve my couple feet of line in.

Send the reel to DVT and have them professionally repair it for you.

This reel doesn't have a flippin switch.

I'll need to see the reel to diagnose. Members here get a 10% discount bringing the cost down to $19.80 plus shipping and parts of needed. If you'd like it repaired send it in at your convenience.

I believe I know what is wrong with the reel.    There is a small metal insert missing from the clutch assembly where the leg of the spring passes through it.  Without the insert there is too much free play and it does not allow the spring to hold the clutch in the correct position.  I have an old Pflueger  reel that I will try to get a picture of the part that I am speaking of so you can see what I am speaking of.

That spring sticking out like that does look suspicious.

Good call AAvery.  I missed that. If you're comfortable taking the rest of the clutch apart it's an easy fix. If you want to send it in as is that's fine too.

Thanks. I would have never guessed that. That piece wouldn't happen to have a proper name so I can order the piece does it?
