Prespawn Topwaters

Recommended Posts

I know that a lot of guys fish suspending jerkbaits to find fish in the spring. Does anybody fish topwaters? Will prespawners hit a topwater? Which topwaters do you fish?

Down here in my neck of the woods. A while back I would have thrown a chug bug, now I just throw frogs.

Yes, I do. I don't anything about bass fishing in Indiana. However our climate in South FL is a little different. The majority of my bass fishing is done in the Everglades which is a unique ecosystem. So if the conditions are right I will frog fish the entire year.

It is pretty unconventional in our area, but I was talking to a gentleman in gander mtn earlier this year who said his buddy had been catching them on topwaters. At the time that I met this guy, it was very early March, maybe even late February. It couldn't have been more than a week or two after ice-out, so the water was clearly still cold here in Indiana. It was definitely thinking outside of the box, but it seemed to work for this guy. Give it a shot

Mid April to mid May I like poppers; for me they work better than walk the dog type lures.

No I was not fishing shad colored frogs. I only fish with 2 colors and shad is not one of them.

I've heard that the absolute best bait for the spawn is a mix between a topwater and a suspending jerkbait, which of course would be the Rebel minnow type lure. Bobble it just below the surface right over the beds, and you'll get crushed. flukes-if they count as topwater-also work.

When there's no wind, I've been able to get them to bite, even in water where topwater temps are not ideal. Xcalibur zell pop is my topwater of choice.

I have never fished one but the devils horse is supposed to be great.  I used to throw a jitterbug a few seasons ago in CT.  The WA fish dont bat an eye at a topwater until very late in the season.  Any of the prop baits should be money right at spawn or after.  It takes forever for the water to warm here due to the cold winds off the coast, puget sound is cold all year round.
