Lews TP owners I have one of these reels and I honestly think I could cast farther how do you have your breaks set?!

I had 2 centrifugal tabs on and the mag dial at 0. Only ever used it when it got windy. Spool tension on the loose side. It's a great little reel.

2 tabs on - mags depend on conditions.

The left reel cover comes off and you have to adjust the brake tabs inside. There is a small captured screw next to the drag star that you can back off with your thumb then you twist the left cover in a clockwise manner. Once that's off you can adjust centrifugal brake. If you already did that there's a good chance that some have engaged themselves during an aggressive cast. I own multiple TP's and the brake tabs would do this when the reel was pretty new. Now that they all have been used for some time they no longer do this.

So true.  Like many when questions are asked about reels, I often only take into consideration the reel.  Anytime casting distance is in question it is critical that you also give a thought to the rod and lure being used.  Even line size has a roll.

I use mine with two brakes engaged.  I really need one and a half.  ;-)   With just one engaged, I can get some scary fluffing during the cast, so I always chicken out and go back to two.

 

I keep the magnetic control anywhere from 1 to 4, depending on conditions.

First, I make sure my spool tension dial is adjusted properly to my bait. Then, have 2 pins engaged and my magnetic dial set at 3.

After reading thru this thread, I looked to see how many pins were on.  Normally my grandson is using this reel, but I got to use it for awhile the last time we were out.   Magnetic brake had to be set higher than I expected.  Sure enough, only one pin out.  Will try with 2 on next spring, but may set another on for my grandson.

 

EDIT:  BTW, earlier this year my Patriarch XT was doing great with one pin on and 3 on the dial casting a 10" ribbontail worm and 3/0 hook.

I can bomb lures on by lews reels but if I want even more distance Ill use a longer rod as well. 

Lock four of the centrifugal brakes in, leaving two loose. Those two should be opposites. Keep my mag brake on about 5/6, unless I'm tossing light lures, then 3-4. Spool tension just tight enough to when the lure hits the ground, you get a loop or two of loose line on your spool.
