Melting Plastics

Featured Replies

Hey, I just read the tutorial on making your own molds. It was amazing, and made me think that I could make my own plastics and save a crap load of money. I have a few questions first.

1. How and what do you use to melt the plastics?

2. Could I just melt some old used plastics to make new ones?

Any other info. on the melting  part would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

1. you can use a microwave or hotplate.

2. I dont recommend it. I dont melt anything down anymore except one that I have poured and do not contain salt.  Some of those favtory plastics hold water and or have other crap in them.  The water will fizz and or pop that might splatter hot plastic and some of the plastics smoke really bad.

If you do not recommend melting plastics, then where would be another place to get it?

GMAN, I really appreciate all your help. One more question and I will stop bothering you. Can I add scents to the melted plastic? For example, I would like to add Berkley power scent to the plastic. Can I do that? If so, would I do that while the plastic is heating up? or put some in the mold before pouring the plastic?

Thanks forthe help.

as long as its oil based not all oil based scents react the same either I have found out. Water base will bubble, pop, and possibly explode plastic everywhere. I would just add it to your bag of pours. It will soak into the plastics enough anyway.

If your going to start pouring your own I highly suggest going to TU and reading a bunch of those articles. Especially the sticky on Newbies. Those guys taught me almost everything I know about it.
