Centrifugal Or Magnetic Brakes For Skipping?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to put together a skipping setup for next year and can't decide which reel to put on it. I have a Abu Garcia Revo SX Gen 3 (magnetic only) and a Lew's Speed Spool BB1HZ (centrifugal only). Which would be better for a skipping set up?

Thanks!

Magnetic

Same.............I can skip way better with a mag break reel than I ever could with a centrifugal. External adjustment on the fly when skipping is a big plus too. For straight up casting, flip a coin, both work fine, in fact centrifugal are less fussy with lighter weights.

I use high tension and zero brakes, so the Daiwa Mag-Z/V system is the easiest for me.

either work fine, but to skip properly a good trained thumb is by far the best... If I had to choose I would go with mag so you can adjust easier on the fly...

Works better for me the opposite. Loose spool and I adjust the breaks as needed. I can skip a weightless stick with casting gear better than most guys can with spinning gear. It's up to the individual user, that's just how I do it.

While everyone probably has their own style and preference, technically, the good old fashion spool control cap is best for skipping. This is due to the fact that it's braking force is stable and constant, and especially effective at the lowest spool speeds, where the other two systems are less effective. The most unstable part of skipping is the sudden deceleration of the bait (and then necessarily the spool) after hitting the water. Next best would be magnetic, because magnetic braking is pretty much directly proportional to spool speed, though it tends to overbrake at low spool speeds. Centrifugal braking would help the least, since it is proportional to the square of the spool speed and is largely ineffective at slow spool speeds.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Looks like the consensus is to put on the Revo SX with the magnetic brakes. Thanks!
