Comin' Down To Fl Again (Palm Beach)

Featured Replies

Hey All,

I'm making another trip down to Forida again (jupiter area) to visit friends and I'm looking to get out and fish while i'm there.  I really enojoyed it last time fishing local canals and some complex ponds as well as an awesome guided trip to Stick Marsh.

I was hoping to get out with a local for some bank fishing or if they were kind enough to have an open seat on a boat to try some local fishing spots (I would help with fuel costs etc).

I'll probably be there end of this month into beginning of February so if anyone wants to meet upshoot me a message.  I'm open to trying some salt or brackish water too.  I always wanted to try and catch some snook and I've heard that the snook fishing in that area is pretty good.

Here are some pics of fish I got there last year:

Holy Bass! I just checked the price of one of those Nezumma Rat's... WOW! Buy now on ebay $260.00!

Thanks.  Swimbaiting is not for the faint of heart. However, that rat on ebay's price is a bit "inflated".  You're welcomed to throw mine if we fish together. Haha.

I'd probably have to take out some insurance first!

And I thought $22.00 for a lure was getting pricey!

Would love to fish sometime, but I am quite a ways from Jupiter and West Palm Beach. I'm north of Orlando with young boys ages 1 & 3 so for now I have to fish locally around here. I'm stuck for now, but looking forward to the stick marsh one day soon, and I hear they are about to flood a new extension which should be awesome!

Stick Marsh is an amazing fishery.  If you live in Florida, along with the Big O and the others, you have to hit it up once.  And it is true about the flooding of new area adjacent to it.  The FFWC has been working hard to make that place a world class fishery digging channels and structure as well as planting vegetation conducive to creating an amazing fishing habitat.  I believe they've  already stocked bluegill and other forage fish there.  The way they are building that place is like as if you are reading a book on bass habitat and locating fish.  In some ways it kinda reminds me of how an architect designs a golf course except they are not tryin to make it hard or challenging. haha

As a snook fisherman I will tell not to fish for them now unless you have a lot of time and patience, it isn't the season for them.  In the winter I can go days or weeks without a snook strike on artificial (I don't fish live bait), summer time I can catch 4-5 snook every morning.  This time of the year fish the outgoing tide, snook like stained water and current, the rougher the water the better.  Jupiter inlet is a good spot for them, when I go up there I like fishing in the back at Dubois Park, not crowded and you can fish off the public boat docks.  Snook will be looking for the warmest water they can find, the intracoastal is probably the best place now, they are off the beaches.  Inshore there is no hot ticket now, some days mackerel and jacks may be coming, but not everyday.  Palm Beach is known as the Jack capital, 10-30# are not uncommon there, try the sea wall just north of Flagler bridge at sunrise.

For the most part these salt species swim around looking for bait, they seldom stay near structure, snook can be an exception to that rule.

Here on the west coast of  FL the winter time is very productive for snook. You have to get into the shallow backwaters to get them. I often fish in very shallow areas with top waters (Zara Spooks and Spook Jrs) with very good results. The fishing is usually better several days after a cold front, once conditions have stabilized especially if the wind is from a southerly quadrant. I fish from shore so I am rather limited to where I can fish.

The snook in freshwater are still pretty active but not quite as active as they were a month ago. I'm anxious to try a chatterbait type lure in saltwater since the freshwater snook just smoke them. Good luck! If you discover the right spot you might just get yourself an Inshore Grand Slam (seatrout, redfish, snook and tarpon).

Thanks for the info guys!  I know from this time of the year on the fishing gets tricky.  So like last time, I will keep my expectations low and just enjoy the my time on water that is not frozen.

Anyone looking for a fishing partner or want to join me for some bank busting let me know.

The weather is awesome right now in South/Central FL. Enjoy your fun in the sun!!

Guess I got lucky last year around this time. I went down to Flamingo Everglades and fished for snook there. They weren't in season so it was catch and release. I was actually hoping for Sea Trout. I caught both on a top water popper jr which I bought unpainted. I did nothing but add glitter to it and several coats of clear nail polish and sealant. The water was a bit rough and it was shallow. The snook weren't to big, I think I have a picture of one in my gallery somewhere. I did finally hook up with a Sea Trout late in the day in a different area.

Anyways, I got sidetracked. Up in the West Palm Beach area is John Prince Park which has Lake Osborne. I know lots of Bass Clubs have tourneys there. I have fished it two times and caught a nice 3 pound bass. I missed a ton of bites though (Early days of Bass Fishing). It has plenty of bank fishing area, but I hear its far better on boat.

Jupiter is the snook capital of Florida ... But during this time its dificult for them .. They are in canals right now because it warmer .. Use big live shrimp or big baits in general at this time ...

As for nasd im not familiar with that area by in winter in fl is when I break out the big baits ... You look like you know what you're doing with the rat .. Keep it up ... Just fish big baits or flip .. Florida =braid country

I've been freezing my buns off, too cold for me.  Caught a snook on my first cast yesterday morning, got right in my car and drove home.  Snook was almost jet black, never saw one quite that dark before.

Lol.. its cold for me too. But compared to what's going on up North right now, South Fl is paradise.

I lasted 10 minutes this morning bass fishing, go later in the day.  Have had an excellent few months of bass fishing, it's time for something else.  My biggest peacock was caught during the freeze of 09, may give them a shot today.  A bluebird day is shaping which might good for them.

Thanks for the updates everyone.  I'm heading to the airport in an hour.  60 degree days sounds like paradise to me right now!  I'll check in once i'm settled.
