How Old Is Too Old?

Featured Replies

I found a couple spools of line thats about 6 years old and im curious how long does it take line to go bad? Or become inaccurate as far as strength goes. Any input?

My opinion differs from many.  In the old days we didn't change line until we had to.  I've used 8# XL that was several years old to land a 20# catfish and 35# carp.  It should be fine as long as it wasn't stored where it could suffer from a lot of heat.  I've heard that sunlight isn't good for long term storage, but I personally always stored my rods in the house.  Not a lot of sunlight hitting the line there.  :teeth:

Some guys feel it is necessary to change their line every month.  They fish more often than I do, may tournament fish and definitely have more money to spend.

Try pulling the line between you hands.  If it breaks easy, get rid of it.  If it cuts your hands first, there is a good chance it won't break on a fish.  :teeth3:

I'm assuming you are talking about monofilament? That being the case, it will keep well in a cool, dry environment for many years. However, if you keep it in your truck, closed up in summer, I'd toss it after the season is over. If, on the other hand, you are talking about braid, the answer is indefinitely, regardless of the environment. JMO. :)

Tie a knot in the middle of a length to test for strength

Great thanks for the help

I've had mono stored unused in my hot year round Florida garage for years.  Spooled up some 17# and went out  and caught 15-20# bonita, line is still good.  I would test it first, it it's weak that probably would show up on the end and not in the interior of the spool.
