custom rod question

Featured Replies

I am fixing to see about having a custom rod made.. and I want it to have spiral guides.. here is my question... I am left handed so do the guides have to go in the opposite direction?

thanks for the answer...

also what is the best bang for the buck 7 ft blank for a nice worm rod?

I have an idea for a rod.. but I don't know if I can afford all the "pretties" I want put on it...

thanks

Hey Al, you're going to have one guide sticking out to the side. It makes sense to me to have that guide on the same side as the crank on your reel. That way, you won't lay it down on the guide.

I am pretty sure that is how Alpster explained it to me.

Spiral left or right is a preference issue.  I go to the same side as the reel handle for everything I build or use.

Blanks are a loaded question... like rods, with no price range you get into a world of options.  I really like St. Croix, Loomis, CTS and All Star blanks.  Most of my personal rods are built on those blanks.   Depending on the budget, there might be other blanks to consider, though.

The right design and proper execution of the build can trump the blank decision, or can make a good blank, great.

Although this is true and is usually advised. I have all my personal rods with the bumper on the left (I crank right handed). The reason I like it personally is, I will sometimes decide to pitch or flip a bait with almost any rod in my hand. With the bumper on the left, I can strip line for a vertical fall and strip line for a flip without dragging it over the top of the rod. I hope that makes sense. I just want to make it clear that which side of the blank the line transitions on has no effect on performance. As fletchero stated above, it is strictly a matter of preference.

The right design and proper execution of the build can trump the blank decision, or can make a good blank, great.
