Hooks While Traveling

Featured Replies

I'm not sure what category I should have put this under, but I'll try it here.  If it gets moved, then so be it.

When traveling on a plane, can you take fishing hooks on the plane?  I will have my travel rod/lures in my carry on bag.  Will they allow this, or do I have to place them inside my check in bag?

I had no issues when I flew and I took my tacklebag as my carry on last year.

You have to put them in your suitcase in a sucred cas (Plano Box) and then have your suitcase checked. I flew to FL for the holidays and made a trip to kissimmee and these were the standards

Anything with hooks must be checked.  Rods(travel) and reels are good for carry-on!

I wonder if it varies by airline? We flew Southwest and they went through my tackle bag that had hooks in it up to 8/0, but they had no problem with me taking it onto the plane? It was actually May of 2013 so maybe things have changed since then with all the goings on of the world?

Probably the best lesson out of this would be to call the airline and ask them directly since they'll know the right answer :)

Maybe Blue, but worst case scenario is, they take it from you at security. Not worth the risk.  I have flown up to 6 times a year with fishing stuff the last 4-5 years and have always packed lures/hooks, and carried on rods/reels.

I called southwest when I went and they told to have my bag checked

It must depend on the person checking your bags. I flew 4 times in the last year and had to have any hook related lure stored under the plane. I found out the hard way when I was holding up the line while they were checking my box full of crankbaits and other baits.

Lol... Sure the airlines will know... Not!

I just flew Southwest about a month ago.  Store the rods below the plane in a cardboard rod tube with your info on it, they'll be fine. Plano tube is much better but both have to be under 91 inches.  I kept my reels in my carry on bag and that was fine with the airlines but all of the hooks were kept underneath in my luggage. TSA agents aren't the brightest people all of the time. If I saw a 10xd in a carry on I would probably stop you to check it out, just my 2 cents.
