Dobyns - New Contender For The $100 Rod Catergory

Featured Replies

I own 2 champions and 1 extreme. They're nice rods, but I'd never pay retail for them. I hate to say it, but they aren't worth it. People are paying for the name. That's my opinion anyhow.

I agree 100% and I've never understood why every dobyn's thread always makes someone angry because of an opinion that is posted on them. I've never seen any other thread ever that brings out the anger like dobyn's threads. Never understood why though.

EDIT....TackleTour's review agreed with this also saying that the down side to champions was it was over priced. Quote from TT  "- Considering some manufacturers are offering rods outfitted with SiC guides for under $200, just a little on the high end of the price curve"  I have been attacked for saying this for over two years and now the majority is starting to say the same thing.

You never know how a rod will turn out based on price. I have a boat load of customs and a lot of them are built on the Rainshadow RX7 blank, which I believe was the cheapest graphite blank Rainshadow

  • DX for all bottom contact baits. Depending on the quality of the Fury blank, either Fury or Savvy for moving baits. Savvy tapers are ideal for a lot of baits I throw i.e swim jigs/spinnerbaits/chatte

I have a boat load of customs and a lot of them are built on the Rainshadow RX7 blank, which I believe was the cheapest graphite blank Rainshadow had at the time. The sensitivity of that blank is better than most production rods IMO, even $250+ rods. It was definitely way more sensitive than a Dobyns Champion at about half the sticker price. Some cheaper blanks can just be special, so all those discounting this rod already because of price...don't. Look what *** did with the ***.

Batson makes some really good stuff.

Did suge knight call for a hit?

What makes these dobyns so special besides a guide, handle and reel seat layout that balances them?

I have a total of 3 Dobyns rods, a Champion and 2 Extremes. Therefore, I am not a 'fanboy' of any rod (or reel) company. There's pros and cons with every rod I use, Loomis, St Croix, Dobyns, Fenwick, etc. You had absolutely nothing positive to say about the rods other than they are overpriced. Guess you're a glass half empty guy who only has negative things to contribute. Do you get jealous of folks who drive Ranger or Lund boats because they're 'paying for the name'?

Incredible that almost no one has even seen, touched, or fished with the Fury rods and already the Dobyns 'haters' come out of the woodwork. Tell me Loomis or St Croix don't have rod lines that are overpriced and overrated. I'm not mad, just tired and disappointed at the moronic statements that sometimes get posted online.

You do realize I started this thread about the fury rod? Also that I said I spoke with Dobyns to get info on the blank verse the Savy? I didn't have anything bad to say about Dobyns. Except that they're are overpriced. Which is true to me. Doesn't mean I don't like them, own them, and fish them. It just means I would never pay full retail, or close to it.

I "MIGHT" have mine this afternoon  definitely this weekend  (735)

I was thinking of trying one of these, I have a  jig rod I need to replace that snapped on me last weekend.

When is this line going to be released? They said in May and it's May 29th...

You'd think a more prestigious company like Dobyns would be on top of this stuff. Maybe come out with a release date and a pre-order system?

It's still May and it's been released for over a week now.

Yes, I know it is still May. All I'm saying is they could have got way more hype over this if they had the release set up with Tackle Warehouse and had a certain date set. Not many people know where to get them right now and it isn't on any large retailers.

I am holding in my hands a Dobyns Fury 735.  It's pouring rain here so this is a "Living Room Pro Staff" review.

Straight as an arrow

Guides all in line

Cork is nice, not a lot of filler

Epoxy work is clean

Reel Seat lock nut has no extra threads showing when a reel is mounted.

Balance point is less than an inch in front of the front of the reel (Citica E and Lexa mounted)

3 Double foot guides, 6 single plus tip.

Looks awesome.

Compared to Veritas 766, Carrot Stix 7'6" H, Mojo 7'9" H, and Savy 735 it just feels better in the hand, not as unwieldy heavy/stiff pool cue feeling.

Doing the "floor to tip test" it feels and has a taper like a 7'MHF St Croix that spent 2 months in the gym (more power, same curve/action).

I'm impressed so far, very impressed.

Dobyns must be a good rod builder. A lot of you guys on this forum use them. I've never seen one.

Great rods in the Champion line up. I love them for moving baits. Cranks jerks top water etc.
