Crankbaits That Most Resemble Blueback Herring

Featured Replies

I fish Lake Hartwell in SC and the blue back herring seems to be the main forage.  Just wanted you're thoughts on what crankbait some of you use to resemble this baitfish.

I have looked at the blueback version of the rapala and the strike king (sexy blueback) but neither really looks like a blueback to me but i'm no expert.

Thanks

Check out the Bill Norman crankbaita in nutter shad look pretty close the back color is a little darker though.

Haven't used this color before but the Lucky Craft Pointer 78/100 in MS Ghost Herring or MS Pearl Herring look very good. Can't go wrong with LC's paint jobs.

Koppers makes a blueback herring jointed swimbait @ 1oz.. Any chromed blue back rattletrap/ crankbait should emulate those fairly closely..

I live on Lake Keowee and we have shad and herring baitfish here.  I've had success on the Spots and Largemouth with Strike King's Redeye Shad in the chrome/blueback color.

I appreciate your input... I'll have to pick up one of the Strike King Chrome Bluebacks and Lucky Craft Pointer is MS Ghost Herring (looks incredible).

Maybe it really doesn't matter to the fish as it does to me but there just doesn't seem to be many great deep diving colors resembling the blue back.

Thanks again

Doesn't really have to be a great color match to imitate herring. Fish whatever shad colors you have and fish em fast and you'll get bit! I use a 7" triple trout on the herring lakes I fish no problem getting bit on the bone color.

Sexy shad colors are pretty spot on imo. Every company has one.
