Lews Super Duty

Featured Replies

Would the Lews Super Duty be a sufficient reel for my flipping and pitching stick or is there a better Lews reel out there for the job?

That reel would work very well for that, esp an 8.1. Brian.

It is an amazing reel in the 8.1:1 ratio. Do yourself a favor and get one.

i have one in the 7.1 ratio. awesome reel. will be great for the applications u described but get the 8.1 ratio

I planned to get the 8.1 ratio, that's what got me excited about it was the higher ratio. The only thing that is holding me back on buying it is the new silver Lew's Lite with the cork handles that comes in 7.5:1 ratio. Wouldn't that reel be just as good and it looks so much nicer!

Check their respective IPT ratios, I think the 8:1 SD will be quite faster due to it's bigger OD spool. Brian.

I love my super duty for flipping and pitching, especially the 8.1

(Eh-hmmm....8:1, not 8.1)

Anal number Nazi over and out, hehehe.

Personally, I like having both centrifugal and magnetic brakes for pitching/flipping. Just a bit more control of the lure entering the water and backlashes. The super duty has only magnetic brakes. Super duty also seems a bit overkill for that application. Thus, I'm using a tournament mb in 8.3:1 ratio and used the money saved to get a bb1 pro for deep cranking.

I'd go with the Super Duty, excellent choice for flipp'n, you'll appreciate the advantages of the larger spool!! plus the reel will balance better on a heavier longer rod. I love mine.

What its made for! I have it on my jig rod!

What's the advantage of a larger capacity spool when flipping? How far do you generally flip?

A large spool is often use for large lines, or techniques that use a lot of line (ie deep cranking). But what about the actual spool? Turns out the larger the radius of the spool (and the line wrapped around it) the more line you bring in with each rotation (this is known empirically as IPT or inches per turn).

So since we all know that flipping is about getting your bait here and there as fast as possible, as well as getting the fish out of the nasty cover as soon as possible, so IPT is really what is important. The gear ratio is generally indicative of IPT, as well as the power in the gear box.

A recent example is Lew's LFS series reels, they have higher ratios, and they are a little more compact. It turns out that they increased their ratios (6.3->6.8) to keep similar IPTs among the reels! Brilliance!

I'm pretty sure that even the smallest spool in the Lews lineup could hold enough 100# braid to pitch/flip 30'.

The larger spool I prefer to give better flipping and pitching performance, it does mean a little more weight very welcome to me on most tip heavy flippin rods, just my preference. I believe it is smoother flipping over even my Team Gold's, but mostly my PP :Victory:
